As the title says, is there a way around a time locked internet access control by changing settings, ip, mac address etc. and if so how? Router is a bthub3 and I do not have the admin details but can override to set up a solution. Thanks for the help, fyi it is only so my pc can download games overnight!
Pretty sure this time locked internet access thing was not set on your router, if there's a way to change this is through the software used to disable all this thing..
Speak to the person who setup the block and explain why you would like it unblocked, what you would like unblocked and during which times. Hacking around to find a solution instead will cause more issues down the line.
I don't have a bt home hub 3, so i am only going on what information i could find. You wont be able to bypass the access control so the only option you have is to remove the device from the list. The first thing you will need to do is reset the admin password. After you have set a new admin password you can then remove your device from the access control settings.
Ok well thanks for the help, and it is set up on the router (bt access control) so what I have been doing so far is resetting the admin password and disabling it for when I need access overnight.
Well I don't know exactly how BT Access Control actually works, but I will assume it is based on MAC addresses (since most of the posts here talk about that). In that case to get around it you need to spoof your MAC address. This process is relatively simple on Linux, involving 3 commands, but on Windows you will need to get your hands dirty. Go to Device Manager, then find your network adapter under the Network Adapters tree. Right click on it and go Properties. Find Network Address in the list, then enter in your own value. Note that there is a limit on the values you can select, as pointed out in this TechNet article. However, MAC spoofing is likely going to cause you problems down the line, so just go and talk to the person in charge of the router - it will save you the trouble.
I have tried reasoning with no success :/, will you still be able to port forward with a 'spoofed' mac address?
But why... If you have access to the router why go though all this hassle, unless you haven't got access and have somehow breached the network and stealing wifi access. This is fishy as f*ck, until explained.
There is no reason why you can't - port forwarding uses an IP address, not a MAC address, so as long as your computer correctly picks up an IP address with its spoofed MAC you will be fine. But hang on, surely you need access to the router anyway to set up port forwarding? Unless you use UPnP?
I have port forwarding software that 'remembers' the router after you log in for the first time so as long as it doesn't forget my saved details then I can port forward and bypass the updated admin password.
^^this, there is obviously a reason the limits have been set, and if you have tried reasoning, and they still refused, has the person who controls the broadband been charged for excessive use in the past?
No, but the broadband is disabled to limit the appeal of the pc running overnight to cut down on electricity costs, I just want to be able to leave a game downloading overnight (broadband is only 4mb/s) so that I can play it the next day rather than waiting.
would it not be easier to get in over wifi? Just get a Wifi USB dongle. You would have a new MAC ect.
is all internet blocked during these hours or just yours? Which ports are blocked? Can you use a VPN?
If a wifi card uses a different mac address then yes but it would also appear on the bt admin panel as my pc so doesn't really solve the problem in the long term. Just my internet is blocked, no ports are blocked but I can not use the internet at all, no idea how to set up VPNs but probably yes!
Before I jump to conclusions, are you living at home with parents and are they concerned that you're not getting enough sleep? If they are telling you not to leave your computer on overnight because of the electricity costs, you could try reasoning with them - ask if you're on dual-rate electricity (I am - it gives cheaper electricity during night-time hours, 11pm to 7am I think), in which case downloading overnight would be cheaper than during daytime. If their concerns are about other things (sleep, download amounts, etc.) then you're SOL. It's better to be upfront with parents. If you try going behind their backs, being subvertive, then you're going to wind up with bigger issues when they find out.
I am guessing from your username that you're 17 or 18. Just offer to pay a small amount towards the electricity costs if that is the only reason your access has been restricted, they can't really argue with that. If you can afford games then you can afford to contribute a tenner a month towards the bills. However I suspect that this is not the only reason it has been restricted, and that your porn addiction was finally getting in the way of your studies (I'm kidding but you get the sentiment). Alternatively you'll just have to buy the physical media, unless you're planning to torrent in which case you deserve to have your daytime access blocked as well
