Finally gotten around to looking at some of the photos I took on holiday. And I quite liked these so had a little play with them.

    Maine Lighthouse

Took this on a day with a totally clear sky, so had to import in a sky from Boston a few days later to give it more contrast. Still not totally happy about the line where sea meets sky.

Thankfully had better skies for these
    Portland Lighthouse 1

    Portland Lighthouse 2

    Portland Lighthouse 3

And now only another 600 holiday shots to wade through and edit and delete duplicates. I should have stuck to shooting in jpg, I wasn’t so picky then.

set with full size pics here

I really like #1,2 and 3, as the natural lighting upon the rocks and lighthouse arent affected with shadows from the clouds. On the 4th however, it seems like the whole top of the picture, the lighthouse in particular, are very dark, probably because the clouds are casting shadows.

But in general, really nice pictures... i really like the raw look of the ocean when it meets the rocks!

Great images...the only thing I'd work on is your dodging and burning.

Got any links to a guide? I think I'm supposed to burn shadows and dodge highlights but don't really have a clue what this does.

all shots are awesome, my favorites goes to lighthouse 3, lighthouse 1 being the least interesting, probably due to the centered composition. good use of UWA lens (at least it looks like it was shot with one...)

Vers, can you explain what you meant by "dodging and burning"?

The Portland lighthouse 1 and 2 are with the sigma 10-20 at 10mm, the maine lighthouse and portland lighthouse 3 are using the kit lens at 18mm and 24mm. Its been my first real time to use the UWA and i started of by getting lots of shots with masses and masses of nothing, lots of sea lots of sky and a tiny strip of land, its been quite a hard lens to get used to but good fun.

Maine Lighthouse and Portland 3 are the best IMO. They are very beautiful.
I'm not so big a fan of the lens distortion all the way at the wide end. Same goes for when I use my Canon 10-22.
I think the strength of these UWAs is how undistorted the shots are at most of the range.
The 10-14mm I prefer to see the distortion used as an "effect".

Here's the original of pic 1.

I'm not as keen on it with the plain sky, but it might do better with something less stormy than first I tried

Actually, it's looking very good with clear sky too.
