Linux has come a long way, but the big problem is trying to make the switch, when you have become so used to how windows works its hard to think of an OS working in a slightly different way.
If we had been brought up on Linux I'm sure we would feel the same about trying to switch to Windows.
I gather that those that persevere with Linux end up loving it, and I may even give it another try myself sometime, I did try Fedora once before, but gave up because everything was just so much easier in Windows (due to the fact I'd spent years using it)

For the average user Linux is not really an option at the moment, as Windows does evreything they want it to do easily.

I've just got myself a mac and it's so intuitive and nice that I really don't see why more people don't use it. Everything just works. I plugged my USB mouse in and there are right clicks, no need to worry there. It's so much easier to use than windows, but there's plenty for the "power user" to get stuck into also.

Fair enough as a gaming machine, macs aren't really up to the job, but for everyone that doesn't game the mac is a very real option. Like the columnist, I never got on with Linux, but OSX is just lovely in comparison to Windows. The only question now is do I sell my PC?

I have been running Linux for the past 18 months and while I will never go back to Windows I am getting more and more frustrated with Linux as a desktop system. I am shortly about to buy a 12" Powerbook and then make a SFF FreeBSD server to act as a back up/file server e.t.c.

I do have to disagree with your opinion on the console. A working console is a god send and is increadibly useful.

I think I am taking a journey many have and will take from Windows to Linux to BSD (OSX)

The problem I've always had with the Mac isn't that it just works but when it's broken its a pain in the ass

Awww, come on...you get SO much help from the frownie-face. :p Nothing like a complete lack of diagnostic tools to help you get things back up and rolling in a jiffy.

Seriously, though...stick to it, Chris, let us know how you end up liking it. I toy with the idea of making the switch all the time. The feature I love MOST is that the command line is so integrated, because frankly I end up using the "run" command as much as I do my GUI in windows, and it drives me nuts. The part that scares me all the time is that damn "compile the kernel" and such, and also whether I can honestly run my games, which is harder on linux.

i recently installed Fedora core 4. i was for the most part happy with it, but it just didnt do it for me. i like it but i prefered suse and went back to that.

also slackware is pretty awesome. :D

and yeah sure its hard to give up windows but all it takes is for you to get used to linux once you have its all good. its just like running windows but different... you know what i mean :worried:

    same difference.... :)

of all the distributions, ubuntu has to be my favourite for new users. I always put them on fedora before, but ubuntu really does just work. And having apt-get/synaptic is far better than yum.

Hell I've even moved over to ubunut and I've been a hardcore gentoo user for years.

I just don't get the linux/apple argument, why swap from windows? its easy, it works, its supported - simple

it's almost as if you are trying to go out of your way to prove a point to yourself that anything apart from windows is better/easier/faster/etc?

i myself have toyed with apple and linux in differenet flavours and understand them both to a certain degree, however I always use windows, notably xp pro ... roll on vista!

stick with what you know - change isn't always for the best :D

What always got me was why make the switch when I've gotten used to Windows and it does everything I want it to, what does it offer me that Windows doesn’t?
I do think about running Linux and have given it a short try, I wouldn't imagine making a complete switch, but maybe running a Linux box next to my Windows one.

I need to keep Windows for gaming, so I would be using Linux for surfing, downloading, email, chat, irc, image work, word processing/spreadsheet work, watching movies, listening to music all of which Window does very well.
Will Linux do it better, with more ease than Windows, more user friendly, just what would be the main incentive for making the switch?

I’m so stuck in my ways I think.

Your kidding right? How long have we been waiting for longhorn now? :wallbash:
What do you mean by older games support? Personally, as much as I detest windows I'm stuck to it, like a 16yr old with a stack of porn :hehe: I've played with mandriva but I haven't tried these others, so I guess I'm back to violating my bandwidth restrictions again :D And as much as the interface frustrates me, I know that I'll grab OSx86 so that I can test pages and flash on different operating systems.

The really sad thing is, when a new version of windows is released, there's an unspoken competition as to who can break it first (BSOD Baby!)

Haven't installed it yet personally. Haz can give it a try without having to shell out for a Mac. If he likes it then why not buy the Mac he was thinking of buying. It could potentially give him the test drive he was looking for.

Myself, the only reason I still have a windows box is for games. I don't want to buy a game "that I may be able to get to work in an emulator if I reconfigure the system." I'll install it on windows and play it in 10 mins. If only more games were developed for/ported too linux, I think it would have a very strong position as a switch-able OS.

XP is fine on my pc, never really crahes and everything works...

In all fairness I used to be a format'aholic but its not much bother, ive started using Ghost now so I just get a nice install then ghost it, if I get any probs then a fire the image up, its a bit of a pain if you change hardware tho as you have to repair the xp install just to get the correct drivers on. I've mannaged to cut down to a few formats a year now :)

I want to try Linux but never got around to it, might have to give it a go some time, Im fairly happy with Windows as ive got used to the shortfalls, the only time Ive had a virus is from 'downloads' or people using my accepting them on messenger.

Most of the time if you pick the right hardware (or get lucky) and look after your os and software you dont have too many problems.

Heres my question, if you buy the latest Mac do you get a faultless experience?

I would agree there better than off the shelf pc's but when ive compared them to self built pc's with hand picked components they dont compare, especially when you put the prices next to eachother :p (I used them for a couple o' years at Uni).

Everything has its flaws but it depends on how they effect you, we all have different needs and expectations so something that may be a right pain in the a_se for one person may be irrelavent to another person.

So cant you request one for a long term test? (blog style?). Bit-tech is a well respected site/community so it would make sense for them to lend you one, if you like it you may even be able to convert some of us to the dark I mean light side :)

This prob all a loada crapola so please excuse me :thumb:

Those of you who get aggravated at windows, im assuming your running windows xp/me/98.
I have been running windows 2000 since release and love it, and I will stick with it until it wont support my games. Windows 2000 is one microsoft just got right! I would run windows 2000 on my laptop but I cant get all the drivers for the hardware.
Every time I have tried xp, I end up cursing it.

Im all for Linux, when it can run my games.

Read the original article linked in the column, it explains the issue.

    I'm not Haz.

Finally, OSX86 a) only runs on a particular set up of hardware which I don't have and b) is illegal anyway so I have no intention of trying it.

Like I also said in the article, this isn't about wanting OSX, it's about trying to live without windows. As a short update, WINE actually works very well which means any applications I can't get Linux equivalents for I should be able to work with.
