Hey folks I need your help.
I need the perfect shuttle faceplate.
(I will be making the faceplate out of alluminum)

This is for my wife's PC here:
    http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38466

    http://www.zapwizard.com/kitten/template.scn
(File will be re-hosted on my main site when I get home)

I have TONS of parts to arrange on the front of my wife's shuttle system.

    -9 White LEDs
-8 IR LEDs (they Glow dim pink/red)
    -4 Vandal resistant Switches
    -2 USB Jacks
    -1 LCD Screen

I have been messing around for hours trying to find the perfect layout.

I need a good balance of function and form.
I have two LCDs listed, both are USB and white back-lit.
Choose either one in the layout.

    The Leds are as follows:
    -IDE activity
    -Network activity
    -DVD Activity
-DVD Disk Present (Optional, I may combine with the DVD activity)
-Charge (Lights when the headphones are charging up)
    -Power (Optional)
    -Channel 1 (Front lights)
    -Channel 2 (Inside lights)
    -Channel 3 (Bottom lights)
+These light to indicated the selected channel that the brighten and dimm buttons control.

Plug 8 Infared LEDs for a headphone transmitter.

The USB cables I will be using are LED type (They have an LED in the connector)

The DVD is a slot load type, and it's outline of the space used is in the scene, along with the outlines of the LCD's PCB

The scene is made in trueSpace3, which you can download for free here:
    http://forms.caligari.com/forms/ts3all_free.html

    The scene file is here:
    http://www.zapwizard.com/kitten/template.scn

Please help by making and arrangement you like.
Use all or as little of the parts as you want.
Don't worry about moving the labels, unless you want to try and fit them in somehow.

    --now get creative and cracking----

I will post some I have come up with tonight.

I will do the painting last, and hope she gives up and likes the PC unpainted.

    I still need faceplates!

    Thanks TK421....

Here is an example of what I am looking for:

I have decided on a lot less LEDs.
I have all the IR leds (I need to do some tests, as only two or four may be needed in reality, the rest I will locate to widen the IR field)
I got rid of the channel indicators, DVD present, and Power LEDs

Instead I will make the lights that are to be controlled throb.
The DVD disk present will instead be wired in with the eject button's light.

    ok here goes ....

keep in mind that i totally SUCK at this 3-d stuff.

click it for the 1280x768 view ..

btw truespace rocks. ive dabbled a bit with friend's copies of 3dsmax, poser, and maya, and couldnt do more than make lines cross then freeze up my puter. truespace reminds me a lot of terragen, the only other even vaguely 3-d program i could ever use without assistance.

( BTW the one I posted was just one out of like 50 I have gone through)

ya i started out symmetrical, but decided to go asymmetrical, but balanced.

that was my 3rd layout ... first one i was happy with, might muck about with it more tomorrow. I need the practice with the 3d stuff really.

I am not going to buy any switches.
    (4x$25=$100 on switches!)

I will attempt to improve on your style of switches.

I am going to go to homedepot and search for metal parts that can be used as the surround, and center, then make the plexi middle part using a acrilic rod I have.

The IR leds are arranged so there will probably never be a blind spot made by an obstruction...

Forgive my not being able to make straight lines of stuff. And yes I am glad you got rid of all of those leds, I did have a white H (and IR led background) in a matrix of leds before I trimmed the number down tho.

edit: how come every first try I do of anything looks like a face?

DBS: that's amazingly similar to how i started out the first time ...

Zap: is there a way to make the grid tighter on truespace?
I was scrolling to the edge of the screen to line stuff up .. i need to make a transparent grid overlay for my monitor :)

I tried the grid options, but it only made objects move smoother?

Right click on the Grid mode button, and it will have 1 listed on each axis, change it to 0.25 to move parts in 0.25" incriments.

    -------------------

    I like that Digitalblueshift, thanks

All mine kept turning into faces, hence why I needed help :D

I think that I will only have two of the IR leds on the front.
I am planning on windows on each side of the case, and I can put two leds on each side to expand the IR area.

    -------------------

I got some new developments (I will start a project log soon)

I have decided since I the bottom of the case was being raised up for a UFO effect, that I would hide the USB ports under the PC.
    (You will see soon)

I don't have much money to spend on this PC (that said I spend nearly $180 today)
But I did find some door-bell buttons at home depot.
They arn't as sexy as the Bulgin, vandal switches, but they are cheap.

They also have a light inside, which of course is a yellowish lightbulb.
So I will be opening them up and replaceing it with an LED.
(Which I tested and looks good)

They have a chrome surround that is 7/8" around
And a white button in the middle that is 9/16" around.

I will have photo's and update the trueSpace file with them.

    Thanks guys...

    ---------------

/Edit Well the PC is now put together, and I just test booted the PC. Project log starts tommorow...

thanks zap i think i understand now ...

im used to photoshop and it's grid ... makes it easy to line stuff up and space it evenly ... but i think i got the gist of what grid means in truespace now.

i also figured out why i went asymmetrical .. its the rule of thirds.

(like in photography, where you dont center the action, but break the scene into balanced thirds to draw the eye across from left to right. or right to left if your culture reads that way. go figure.)

ED: i just had a random thought. wouldnt it make more sense to put the IR transmitters in the monitor bezel, not the pc?

    </2cents>

    Hmm, good idea...
I could just relocated the entire IR Transmitter to the monitor.

But one problem mabye is that the PC is intended to be more portable.

So having as much as I can inside one box would be best.
I did a lot of work on the PC over the weekend images later.
