I want to upgrade the motherboard of my xps 720 and be able to use all the other parts with the new motherboard. Which motherboard would be best?

You'll need to give us some more specs, what CPU/RAM etc do you have?

If it's something like a Core 2 Quad then you might find it difficult to get a brand new motherboard now.

Why do you want to upgrade the motherboard but keep the CPU etc? Afaik LGA775 boards are getting few and far between and probably will only be equivalent to your current one.

What's your budget for upgrading? What do you use the system for?

All the parts look horribly outdated against current hardware so if your budget allows for it, you'd probably do best to keep the drives (HD, optical) and upgrade the CPU, graphics card, RAM & motherboard. Potentially keeping the RAM would be an option but RAM is the cheapest component to upgrade so it's a toss-up.

Upgrading the motherboard won't do anything except make the inside of your box look prettier. If you want a performance boost, you need to upgrade the graphics card, the cpu, the ram and/or the hard disk (get a SSD).

Dell XPS720s are BTX machines. Therefore it will be very hard to upgrade it. AFAIK the only BTX stuff on the market is from Dell and you already have the latest stuff in it. About the only thing you can change is the CPU, RAM and gfx cards. The top CPU would probably be a QX6700.

Well the only thing that is really holding back from keeping the case, and they are nice looking, is the orientation of the back panel. It isn't hard to remove it and replace it with one that could accommodate atx standard. I have seen several of these mods done. If you are able to do that, then there is really nothing stopping moving up to 1155 except budget. Even current dual cores can outperform the old 775 quads in many tasks.

I just stuck a 550ti in my dell desktop, nice upgrade... 60 fps locked with vsync in most of my older games, dirt 2 runs nice in dx11.

I would just put a 560ti in there if you can afford it.

Unless the motherboard has died you have to have an old board for that cpu, which wouldn't really be much of an upgrade.

If your going to buy a mother board and cpu and then your going to need new ddr3 ram.

Perhaps a better psu and then you might as well upgrade the gpu, after all that you might as well buy a cheap case since dell cases are not very good. (air flow)

and......you have just built a new pc, lol.

I know this is old post but I still have this machine and it is running fine. Inow have gtx 6600. I have noticed the HD is now the bottleneck and I am looking for an ssd to replace with. Can anyone recommend me with decent ssd replacement. I don't want to purchase an ssd where the machine will not be able to keep up. Prefer to spend around £100 or less. I saw Samsung 850 pro for 110 on dabs.com 256GB

Assuming that the rest if the parts are still socket 775 era, every SSD you can now buy will be bottlenecked by the board running at SATAII speeds. Unless you've upgraded board, CPU and RAM?

It's really not that bad though dude. I'm running a 1055T on a Asus M3A32 MVP with 8gb DDR2 and the SSD I use made the rig fly.

Only issue I had was that I could not seem to locate a AHCI/RAID driver for the board at all (not even for Vista) so had to set it up as IDE in the bios.

True. My intention wasn't to say (even though I essentially did) to not purchase an SSD as it will be much faster than a HDD. I just wanted to say he wouldn't be getting the SATAIII speeds :)
