I've bought a motherboard speaker from Maplin to help diagnose why my system won't start up (no display on the monitor so I'm relying on the mobo's POST beep codes) but the mobo connector has 4 pins labelled Gnd, 5v, 5v and Speaker whereas the Maplin thingy has only two wires going into pins 1 and 4, with pins 2 and 3 (i.e. the 5v pins) empty/not wired.

Is the Maplin speaker incompatible with the spkr connector on my Asus P6T SE?

Are you sure it's not 5v+, GND, GND, Speaker? Normally the 5v and speaker connectors are used.

Yes you're right it is. I'm guessing the ground pins in the speaker plug aren't needed?
Does it matter which way around the speaker plug is connected to the mobo?
The plug has a black and white wire going into it and the white wire plug terminal has a triangle above it which I presume is the 5V line?

I assume it doesn't matter as I just plug them in....unless by sheer coincidence I've got it right every time.
