I just ordered myself an MSI 790FX-GD70, 8 GB of Crucial DDR3 (almost certain D9s), and a 720 BE, am I gonna be the only one in this club for a while?
I guess your right on that one, you might be alone for a while, considering the on going success of the mighty Q6600. I still have a motherboard that excepts DDR3 and my Q6600 so i might try some DDR3 out one day.
My next build is going to be AMD but for right now I'm fine with my computer. By the time AMD releases their 6 core (Sao Paulo) and 12 core (Magny-Cours) 45mm chips, thats when I will upgrade.
I planned to go for a X3 720, but by the time you factor in a decent board, that does not need to be bios flashed, to be compatible with AM3 procs, basically one of the new AM3 motherboards, the cost is higher than the Q6600 and P45 Asus or Gigabyte combo deals available at scan. In terms of performance the Q6600 is faster clock for clock and has an extra core, but the X3 720 overclocks higher. Shame a new AMD, would have been good company for my ancient K6, my first proper PC, bless!
That's an expensive board, as well as a lot of DDR3 ram, if you're already spending a good chuck of dough, maybe you should wait for the X4 955, it's out sometime in April.

Just testing that MSI 790 - it's turning out quite a nice board so far but I've got to stress it some more next week.
i'll be going AM3 cpu, but AM2+ platform as I DDR3 way to expensive considering not much performance gain
Hi kayinblack, No pal, you are not alone I also have just purchased the same Mobo and am building a new folding PC. This is a major upgrade from socket 939. The New PC consists of the Following :- Lian-Li V2100 Plus II heavily Modified for later inclusion of water cooling. Corsair HX1000 PSU. Inital CPU phenom II X3 720, to be replaced by a X4 as funds allow Mem 4GB of Corsair DDR3 1600 Awaiting delivery of a Nvidia GTX 275 GPU OS Vista Home Premium 64 bit There appears to be a small issue with the Sata system but it is fixable so I understand.
To be honest, with the latest AM3 releases, the PII 940 price has been pushed down and is looking good at only £155 on Scan's today only offers. Couple that with a £90/£100 board and some DDR2 and I think you get a fairly good system, not far off AM3 performance, for a lot less. I would have thought though that if you're going AM3 you'd opt for the 955, although the 720 is supposed to be a very good chip to play around with...
Yes, I seriously considered that solution but as DDR3 is getting cheaper and the 720 was also competitively priced and I wanted a good long lasting solution, probably my last PC, I decided that this was the time to go for it and get the best MoBo i couuld afford, it is mainly for Folding .However I was surprised by the speed that AMD brought out the 955 , also I want to watercool, so decided to make haste slowly, whilst I agree that at present the difference between DDR2 and DDR3 isn't great at this moment it is the up and coming thing, I am getting long in the tooth, and could be one of the oldest on this forum and am making the Jump from socket 939 so here goes
Actually that's a fair enough argument. To be honest there's a good argument for both. It makes sense what you say, you could get some good play out of the 720 and be ready to slap in another AM3 later down the road when they bring out chips faster than the 955 if you want some more grunt. I agree with what you say, although an improvement, the 955 isn't gobsmackingly faster than their current range.
if a decent mATX board comes out soon i think i might switch. it seems to be decent stuff, and i just want to suppor the underdog for a while. intel's so dominant lately it's scary.
Good God, the beta 1.31 is amazing. A cheapass 89 dollar SSD is spanking an Intel X25-M with it. Burst, access are both phenomenal. Stock Bios (1.0), Windows Vista x64 Bios 1.1, Win7 7068 x64 Bios 1.31, same install That's some major improvement.
Above post, wrong thread? I'll look into the 6-core AMDs when the time comes to upgrade, but I really don't care about the brand, just what works best for me.
