$7pppm? So after about 18-24 months you end up paying more than you would have done to buy it outright? I don't see the advantage.

Not per say, it appears to be a subscription license for Microsoft partners (who pay the $7), who can then turn around and bill obscene amounts of money to clients for management and support of the environment. M$, will wipe their hands clean of it just the same as they do with an OEM license.

I wonder how quickly the "option" turns into a "requirement"...

Not all businesses need everything FOR 18-24 months. If you're running a short term project - 3 months, say, you could license Windows, Office, Adobe Photoshop etc etc all on a cheap-as-you-like subscription basis...and then cancel them all at the end of your gig. Total cost... a few quid a month for a few months - FAR cheaper than retail copies of the above.

At which point there will incentiveenough for someone to develop and sell a cheaper/non subscription genuine alternative to windows.

Or they'll make home free and all other versions paid at various tiers. I love how MS continues to find new ways to make me hate them.
