Anyone got a new % series intel processor folding? If I understand correctly then the new 5960X should be able to handle the minimum criteria (16 threads) to get on with BIGADV wu's. I can't afford the upgrade but I'm wondering whether BIGADV will be attainable once more on desktop (as in non-server) rigs....
The 5960X will have the most threads for a Desktop CPU, but it will not do bigadv - 24 cores is the current minimum (see Vijay blog). Also note that bigadv experiment comes to an end at the end of January 2015. So I wouldn't spec up any hardware just for doing bigadv any time soon .... even if you could afford it!
Just spotted that Intel have just released some 4grand 18 core/36 thread monsters... and from what I can see they are compatible with the X99 platform (albeit dependent on mobo bios). Shame you can't overclock the Xeons any more
Ouch I should read up more. Didn't realise BA was coming to an end. So what's the future for MP rigs? Wow Tattysnuc £4k for 1 processor. So you getting 2 then?
I don't think they have decided what the future is yet - hopefully they will have something in place before the end of January though(!)
Surely the worst case scenario is that you will be chewing your way through "standard" WUs at a phenomenal rate? Either lots of, say 8 core slots? Or the FAH application will spread the WU across all your threads and your rig just abliterates it? You just wouldn't get the credit for that you do for the super-duper hard WUs at the moment? It's not like MP rigs are now obselete or anything?!
Hehe, yeah but the difference is like between 400K and 100K PPD. Its always about science, but the points are nice.
