Hi Guys, I've had my MSI GTX 670 OC pretty much bog standard since August 2012, and its beginning to show its age a little, and I'd quite like to upgrade it. The rest of my system is all still pretty up there (4Ghz 3570k, 16Gbs o Ram etc). As always, I have an issue with spending more than about £220-250 on a GPU because I simply don't need anything better as I play many multiplier games at 1920x1200. Would my best bet be going for a 4Gb GTX 970? Or save money an get a second 670 for SLi? Or perhaps wait for next series of GPU's as I'm not exactly in a hurry.
You can get a 970 for under £200 now if you don't mind going SH off the forum. Pick up an EVGA and you're golden. I think there might even be one on there now. Edit price check on one here: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=292466
I just ordered an AMD R9 390 as an upgrade to my GTX 670, got it for £210 new, it beats the 970 is most games.
It also uses 50% more power. The 970 is a solid bet and a well worth it upgrade over the 670. My money would be spent on a 970 too. I have a 980 (for benchmarking and reviewing only) and it is a monster.
both the 390 and 970 are good cards - especially in DX12 where the 390tardes blows with the 980 (in fable)
Yeah when I say keeping me happy I don't mean ultra settings 60fps in every title, but then if he's been using a 670 at 1080p to this point I guess he's used to that. To give the OP an idea: I have most things in The Witcher turned up to Ultra and have limited the frames to 40 (sometimes i'd be getting more but the choppiness is horrible), looks lovely in 1440p. MGS V is no problem 50-60 fps everything on Ultra at 1440p
MANKZ!! good god man, u still rockin that 670?? like i can talk...had my 570 until a week or 2 ago if you were over here, evga gets refurbed 670's in stock regularly for a decent price and they have a 1 year warranty... ive got this gsync monitor now with the strix 970, and every day i enjoy it just a little bit more...siege looks great, downloaded gta v on the new rig finally so will give that a spin here in a day or so...maybe wait until they throw in a free game you want or something
http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/powercolor_pcs_r9_390_8gb/15.htm http://hardocp.com/article/2015/09/21/xfx_r9_390_double_dissipation_8gb_video_card_review/10 Both of these put it at around 15-20% although seems a more fair comparison comparing a pre overclocked/non stock 390 with a pre overclocked/non stock 970.
Apparently the 390 will be the better DX12 card. If you've had the 670 since launch then you obviously think about the future a little so I would get the 390. Early impressions seem to show that it's not a little bit, the 970 gets totally trumped in DX12 by the 390.
Why are we all obsessed with the power usage? Mankz hasn't posted a set power usage requirement. Basically Mankz, if the power draw bothers you grab the 970, if you want the slightly better card grab the 390. Techpowerups latest review summary shows the 390 matching the 970 at 1080p, beating it at 1440p, and their tests include a few games where AMD performance compared to NVIDIA's is off. Either card will be great though. I'm surprised drivers haven't been mentioned yet, maybe I'm spending too much time reading overclockers forums. Edit: 670 SLi will draw more than a 390 by that TPU chart.
