Graphics What was the first gaming GPU you had?

For me it has to be the Geforce FX 5200, unfortunately. I had been using integrated graphics at the time, so it was a massive improvement for me. Finally, I could play RA2/Tib Sun/Generals on some kind of quality, however, it was still a piece of crap. I specifically remember thinking it should be better than it was. No worries, the next GPU I ended up with was a 9800 Pro. Now that was a nice piece of hardware at the time.

Thinking back to old computer hardware like this is a little more unique and fun than other products. A car 5 years ago is still basically gonna more or less similar to a car today. Maybe a few more bells and whistles and an updated exterior design, but not the huge generational leap provided by the fast moving computer technology realm.

So what was the first GPU you remember having and getting all giddy over? What were you excited to break it in with?

 

my first gaming GPU hmm... Nvidia's RIVA TNT!

 

I cant remember the name of it all, but it had 4mb of memory... It was for a RC flight trainer that me and my dad had. I learned a lot from that thing and did very well when I flew my actual plane.

 

3D Rage Pro or a 9600 AIW

The AIW played HL2 well enough..

 

Matrox M3D 4MB (PowerVR) , which sucked

Voodoo 3 16MB PCI, which was much, MUCH better

First real one was a Tornado TNT2. Now THAT was gaming

 

I believe the first true graphics accelerator was a S3 Savage, before that IGP worked fine.

Next was a matrox millenium II, mighty 4mb of VRAM good enough for AOE 2 at the time.

Geforce 2 followed by the FX 5700 LE, which i modded to an Ultra.

6800GT first card to get watercooling, and the heaviest overclock i ever achieved on any card yet.

6800GT died after 3 years, and replaced by a 7600GS due to funds, but that played COD 2 fine!

Hopped up to a 8800GTS 320 after that, now on a GTX280.

 

Voodoo 3 2000 PCI.

Was a beast - and it's still in use! I gave it to my sister eon's ago and she's still using it.

 

If I remember correctly it was a GeForce MX200 with 32mb of Ram.

It was purchased primarily for Flight Sim 98 (I believe it was '98).

Though to avoid those limited frame rates I upgraded to a real aeroplane ten years ago.

 

A Geforce 6600GT...

 

PNY GeForce 4 Ti 4400! Couldn't get my parents to shell out the extra for the 4600 though. On the bright side, the 4400 came with a pair of 3D glasses that seemed to work alright. I couldn't get used to playing Serious Sam with them on though, so most of the time I left them off.

From there, ATI 9600 XT, up to a 9800 Pro, then to an X1800XT, then to a 4870, now to a 5870.

 

An 8mb Voodoo 2 PCI.

Still have it somewhere too.

It was awsome at the time. I think it was about £140.

3D Labs Permedia 2! 8MB of VRAM - why would you need more? It ran games like Wing Commander: Prophecy and Battlezone very well.

 

A start with a really old Matrox, then a leap to the X1550/X1300(hey it was a giant leap since it was from a really crappy PCI card to a crappy PCI card), then a 7800GTX(used) then a HD4850 which was a leap from the 7xxx.

 

GeForce 2MX.

had that for yonks, then bought a laptop with an ATi mobility 9000. then when that died a desktop with an X800.

 

Geforce MX 4000 AGP 64MB followed by the 6800 Ultra 256MB a few years later.

 

Voodoo 3 2000. Midtown Madness at 1280x1024 was nothing short of jaw dropping.

Then it was a Geforce 1 DDR, then a couple of Geforce 2's, then a Geforce 3 Ti200, then a Radeon 9800Pro, then a 9700Pro (my 9800 died and I borrowed my wife's gfx card for a week), then a Geforce 6600GT, then a 6800GT, then a 7800GT, then a 7800GTX, then an 8800GTS 320, then a 9800GT, then a 9800GTX, then a GTX260 to my current GTX275. I think I've sold nearly all of them on here in the past

I remember playing combat fight sim on that, it looked great.

 

Are we not including the original Voodoo? I know it worked in tandem with your existing GPU, but surely that was the first 3D card?
