well router has been playing up and want to get a new one, price is not an issue but want one that can handle many connections thanks Adam
Well I'll toss a couple of cents into the very shallow pool by saying that I've had an outstanding experience with D-Link's gaming routers. They're a bit expensive, but the throughput is just awesome for a consumer lan.
how many connections we talking and what kind of data speeds do you need. is it for home use or more business focusssed stuff
I'd be tempted to buy a couple more boxes... A branded (say Netgear or Cisco) router £40 A good gigabit switch £40 A good wireless access point £70 From experience this offers much better LAN/WAN performance than an all-in-one unit. Connect the switch to the router, and everything else (including the WAP if needed) into the switch.
PCPro did a router labs test when I got mine a couple of years ago, and reckoned the Belkin Wireless-N routers where best. That was a while ago, and of course they aren't really gamers over there the dualband wireless-n routers from various companies look very nice.
When I was downloading lots of torrents I had to ditch my Netgear router as it kept dying from running too many concurrent connections. I stuck a Draytek Vigor in and it was brilliant!
yer i need a router to do the same as bestseany, mine dies from too many concurrent connections so is the draytek vigor is the best one to go for then for the uses i need edit: do u bestseany have the draytek Vigor 2130 Series Broadband Router
Looks like Draytek are the current PCPro champions, with Buffalo the budget option http://www.pcpro.co.uk/alist/wireless-router
Netgear WNR3500L (make sure the L is at the end). Gigabit and runs DD-WRT. Stock just started showing up in USA/Canada so it may not be in europe yet.
Right now I've just got a budget Linksys, but I've been looking at the D-Link DIR-655 and the DIR-825. Both have 4 gigabit ports and wireless A/B/G/N. The difference is the 825 is dual-band.
Wierd, I've had the Belkin N1 Vision for about 16 months now and seems ok . . . from the lab tests, it's range, max number of connections, etc isn't as good as the Drayteks, but it doesn't seem to be a steaming pile of poop.
D-Link DIR-655 here. Apart from ARP broadcasts every minute that means putting LAN computers into S3 is next to impossible, it's a great router. Wireless N and G has great range and fast connections. I can transfer large files over the wired gigabit at 115MB/sec. I've never had it bog down with too many connections when torrenting unlike my old Netgear router.
Not to thread jack, but that's good to know. None of the reviews I've read have mentioned that at all.
Linksys WRT-350N over here, great stuff... Had a lot of WRTs, all were good kit... And I agree, stay clear of Belkin... Had one over at my students house, that bloody thing needed more reboots then a Celeron OC'd to 10GHz... I should be really promoting my employers products, Alcatel Lucent We have the best routers... But I doubt you'll want to dish out 1M euros for one (without the IO modules ) If not, I can get you an employee discount of 15%
No, I had an old Vigor 2900 router. It was old kit from work that I borrowed when my Netgear kept needing to be rebooted whenever I'd been downloading torrents for more than 30 minutes. The Draytek would happily run for weeks without needing any attention.
