I want to grab a music track from a YouTube video and wanted to ask if anyone knew a simple and SAFE way of doing this - I say SAFE as there are several sites offering tools etc that show up as being riddled with malware, and I don't need those sort of problems!

    Thanks for any suggestions...

I use JDownloader. It offers to download all the various Youtube flavours, just pick the one you want.

BONUS: It also works on most "File Locker" sites like Mega etc.

Sorry I should have been more precise...

... what I actually meant to say was I want to rip an AUDIO track OFF of a Youtube video - not just simply download a video from YouTube...

    Thanks!

KeepVid has an option to save the audio.

JDownloader rips a separate M4a audio track as well as the mp4 video file. You have the option of downloading as an AAC, OGG or poor quality mp3 track instead.

One 'gotcha' with Jdownloader: Go to the forums, and download the version that does not include the bundled adware. The download on the homepage should be avoided.

    This ^

I spend 95% of time running Linux, the install for which doesn't have adware, so I forgot. Sorry.

If you are concerned about quality, newer youtube audio will be already encoded as AAC, so if your playback device supports AAC, you can just rip the audio track without having to reconvert it to mp3.

Of course the quality of the source from when it was uploaded in the first place will factor into this. If it was originally a 128kb/s mp3, then it will still sound like a 128kb/s mp3 even when youtube encodes it as AAC. Re-encoding something like this back to a mp3 will just add more artifacts to the sound you hear.

I used software called mp3mymp3, and I still have the old installer which doesn't have any of the malware in it. Really disappointed that such awesome software was poisoned with that crap, and I would advise that you steer clear of it now.

If anyone's interested I can PM you the "clean" installer, I think it's from circa 2011 and I still use the program often - it's really convenient!
