First, let me say I know nothing about cars. At all. I know what a ford focus looks like; I know, vaguely, that a Nissan Skyline goes quite fast. But even I've heard of these cars, simply because they're timeless cultural icons, pure and original muscle cars, and they're both things of beauty.

...and they've been featured prominently in films I've seen recently.

So if you could have one (dangerous hypotheticals ahead), in mint condition, would it be a 1968 Pontiac Firebird (favourite of Lester Burnham in American Beauty), or a 1967 Shelby GT500 as advertised by the last man on earth, Will Smith?

Yeah, I know he drives the 2007 model, but that's because he's a corporate whore - and, the 67 models are too much a piece of history to let an actor throw one around New York.

    Will Smith's was a new GT500 - 2007 as you say.

I'm not that into American muscle, but I'd go for Eleanor (Shelby):

Id have to go with the firebird from the options,Ive never really been a fan of any mustangs tbh. But my favourite old american would be a 1959 El Camino, not strictly a muscle car I know but there sooo cool

Out of those two it could only be Eleanor.

We have a 1959 El Camino running around Denver that I see every once in a while. The dude put a big block Chevy engine with a large GMC blower on it and hooked it to a Toronado transaxle and mounted it in the bed. It's very poor at high speed corners but it goes flat out in a straight line. It's an impressive sight with all chromed out and sounds like a racecar.

Yoda got it in one, the '67 Shelby wins by a solid mile.

The Shelby is undoubtedly the nicer car but something tell me I'd always regret getting it over the Firebird.

    Yes please, BOTH!
Have actually driven a Mustang, it was in a terrible state thou, so it was a nightmare to drive...

And I actually own a muscle car.. a 67 Chevelle SS
in about 4000 pieces at the moment thou.
but it will look like this when its done (with 15" rims, and more rubber than that one, more oldschool you might say)

Respect for the Shelby legacy, but I'd pick the Firebird without contest. I've constantly fallen victim to the voluptuous but subdued curves of the B-/E-platform Chrysler muscle coupes, reminding me of a woman's dress, and the Firebird is certainly a dressy car.

No way dude! I have a model of that car on my desk... along with a few other favourites (a 911 GT2, a Ferrari 250GTO and a Nissan Skyline)

Dude... what?! Who would womens' dresses appeal to you? Are you hiding something :p

    (I'm kidding ;))

I'd take a 69 camero or a Eleanor... we actually had one at my work a few months ago for the body work and paint, and a few more accessories. Wickedly awesome looking car.

A basic mustang would not compare to a Pontiac Firebird for me(I like Pontiac muscle/pony cars) but a Shelby GT500 would take the cake for me, no comparison. Both beautiful cars though.

When it comes down to those two, for me, it's the engine noise that would decide it. Since I haven't heard either car in person (crappy youtube clips aren't good enough :B), then I'd be happy with either to be quite honest.

I'd go Shelby GT500 personally... just because i've always loved that car.
Even though if push came to shove, i'd want a '67 Dodge Charger with a 440 Hemi engine...

The only way a muscle car should be!! Hate old muscle cars with ricer rims.

anyways, for old muscle cars my top choice would be a 1967 Corvette with the kick ass 427 Big Block

this would be awesome to have as well

as far as the original question. although i dont like fords, id take the Shelby. That pontiac doesnt really do it for me and the Shelby is awesome despite being a Ford.
