    From the Register:

Step back, take a deep breath, gather some courage and then let out the deepest, abdominal-wrenching gut laugh you've ever experienced. Universal Music Group has lowered CD prices.

The hilarity of the situation has gone unnoticed by most media outlets. They've portrayed Universal as a brave white knight taking a bold stand to try and correct a very wrong situation. File-traders have eroded the music labels' revenue stream.

But a finely-tuned organization such as Universal isn't going to be undone by millions of teenagers. It's taking the daring, some say revolutionary, step of risking precious margins in favor of high volume sales. Maybe if we price the products low enough, we can bring consumers back.

"We are in the middle of a terrible situation where our music is being stolen," Doug Morris, chairman of Universal, told The New York Times. "We need to invigorate the market, and as an industry leader we felt we had to be bold and make a move."

Be bold? Industry leader? That's where the joke begins.

It is a joke, but i think that it may well work, i often go out to buy a cd only to come back empty handed because of the stupid prices (often £15 for 1 album).

That's the joke at the moment; i killed an album i absolutely LOVED a while ago and i haven't had the wallet to replace it yet because it's still £16! :eeek:
If they lower prices then i'll certainly think harder about replacing ones that are damaged and buying more new ones...

Yeah, I made this point in a thread about the RIAA stuff that's going on. They want us to stop downloading music, and we want them to reduce CD prices so we can actually afford to buy it instead. It's good to see Universal are making a move in the right direction, even if it is for the wrong reason (to make more cash rather than to please the music-buying public).

A lot of people have made the point....

Anywho, I think the Register is way too good at holding a grudge, it's better, IMO, to be thankful that someone is changing the rules. Universal may not really be a WHITE knight, per say, but a gray one? Perhaps...

Now we just have to pray that Universal's sales will go up, showing other record companies that, WOW, it DOES work! Maybe someday we'll actually see price wars at the record shop? :eeek:

shouldn't you be able to download then seing as you own the original. you still payed for it, just because it's damaged shouldn't stop you from enjoying what you payed for. i mean all other goods you pay for come with 1year waranty so should cd's.

you would think so but that still is illegal, the lil cd is your legal copy, your allowed to make a copy of it for backup purposes but once its destroyed you can't download after the fact. also they want your money from the people that loose or break cd's

the music industry screwed the public over on that one.
it is illeagle to copy or own non-oridginal copies of cds
u own no matter where u brought them.

meaning when u buy a cd u cannot copy that cd for back-up
purposes nor can u dl/aquire a copy of this cd for back-up
    purposes. :grr:

I believe in the US you CAN legally make one back-up copy for personal use. I know you can with data CDs and I think you can with audio too.
