News Apple admits to MacBook Pro GPU design flaw

    Already booked mine in for repair (mid-2012 rMBP). It really seems that we need to stop using tin solder on GPUs as it is causing endless problems. This is the second recall for Apple's laptops for the same problem, in addition to the 8800 era issue that went across laptops and desktops.

    As the problem is an inherent design flaw free repairs should be taken as read. There should never have been any question of Apple doing anything else.

    Strictly speaking, it isn't: Apple's manufacturer screwed up when attaching the GPU to the motherboard, and the flaw is GPU-vendor independent. However, if you're asking which GPUs were fitted to the affected models: the mid-2012 and early-2013 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display had an Nvidia GeForce GT 650M, while the early-2011 15" MacBook Pro had an AMD Radeon HD 6490M or 6750M depending on how it was specced and the 17" version was exclusively available with an AMD Radeon HD 6750M; the late-2011 15" MacBook Pro had an AMD Radeon HD 6750M or 6770M, while the 17" version was exclusively available with an AMD Radeon HD 6770M. All these are covered by the extended repair programme. The 13" models of all MacBook Pro and Retinas use Intel's integrated graphics and feature no discrete GPU, so are not affected.

    I'm afraid that my attitude to problems with Apple machines generally come down to the idea that Mac owners can probably afford a new one.

    Which is great... in theory. As is the concept that a warranty claim can be invoked by the customer pretty much 10 years after the product was purchased, if the the fault is a result of design or manufacture, present when the product was originally purchased.

    It's all great in theory, because in practice manufacturers and companies like Apple will NEVER admit that there is a problem. At least not until a lot of people get behind something to prove it. So you, as the customer, bear the burden of proof. Unless you happen to be well-read, involved or interested in the field, then that's probably easier said than done isn't it? If you contacted Apple and they rebuffed you, what do you do?

    So yes, whilst there "should" never have been any question about, there undoubtedly was, because Apple like all businesses are about making money, not creating costs. Admitting this is costly and will have a cost associated with it for years to come. It's also basically a small victory in the scheme of things because there are many products from many companies that have design flaws in them that cause problems which the companies involved do not own up to and so the people spending the money buying their stuff are the ones still getting a bum deal.
