I have an old p3 733 384mb box thats currently running pf sense (firewall) on my LAN. I also need a basic file server functinality to support a new IP based PVR box that I just bought. I looked at inexpensive NAS servers, but the performance is dismal tbh.

I've never done any muking about with virtual machines, so I'm not certin of the best way to go about doing this.

Depending on what file systems (>4GB support required) the PVR supports, I would prefer to use something free (samba?) for the file server, but I can probably get a copy of XP to put on there.

I'll probably try building this first on a p4 3.2ghz box I have kicking around, as I want to work out all the kinks before I take the firewall offline.

Any suggestions on the best way to go about doing this?
