dell 30inch with Adobe RGB costs £1k this will cost like £5k + putting it well above the means of many. to be truthful even dells 30inch is above what most will pay for 1 monitor, id love this sorta monitor but it would cost way too much for us none millionaires lol. In the proffesional work area i could see this selling at any price and i guess thats where LG is aiming this product.
$5k for this kind of resolution isn't that unreasonable to be honest. If you remember when PDP displays first came out (like LCDs) you had 50" screens (and even some 32" and 42") that cost upwards of $4k. If I remember correctly, Pioneer Elite Plasma Displays ran up to $8k just for a 1080p display. Mind you it was amazing, but those kinds of prices aren't that unreasonable if it's new tech. And a 30" Dell is almost $1500 over in the UK?!
yes its around £900 give or take with Adobe RGP colour ( on amazon ) on USA website its $1400 though so we are not talking a huge markup from dell surprisingly.
Not to mention the level of cash you would need to drop on GPU power to game at full res on a screen like that.
Well as I understand it, A 680 will support 4096 x 2160 but only at 24hz which is not really much cop. I suppose the next gen of cards will have to have 4k support @ 60hz via a single port. As far as I'm aware there is no port or cable in existence currently that is capable of doing that.
you are correct about no gpu support a 680 can do 4096 at 24hz which is useless thats from display port. so even 2 might not be enough. 2 gens time gamers will probably see the support you may see a proffesional card from nvidia cuda series released with support soon as this is released like.
DisplayPort 1.3 is expected to support 4K at 60Hz. But that is not soon, from what I know. I doubt Dell would release a dual DisplayPort monitor, same for Nvidia GPU to immediately support DisplayPort 1.3 on the 700 series, which is not finalized. What I am trying to say, is maybe, MAYBE, in 3-4 years from now. So if you recently bough a monitor, perhaps your next one will be 4K. Now, you can get the EIZO 36inch 4K monitor, using dual DisplayPort, but do you have 38K U.S to spend (~38x U3011 on special or 1x 4K monitor )?
Hmm... I really don't know if these 4k-displays are really that much interesting. These high resolutions are nice for tablets and smartphones, but for PC-screens and TVs they're actually not that much of an improvement imho. A 27" with 2560x1440 (0.23 pitch) is actually quiet dense allready and you barely see any pixels, when sitting some 80cm (length of an arm) away from the screen. Additionally, you'll have troubles anyways to power these screens with current GPUs when we talk about gaming. So these resolutions are only interesting for doing photoediting really and I'm happily doing that with my 27" screen not really needing more resolution. Oh, and for playing games I allready tune down to 1920x1080. Sometimes bigger just isn't better.
I don't care so much about the resolution. More importantly, when are we finally going to get 48-bit displays, or at least something higher than 8 or 10-bit per channel displays?
No you don't understand. The idea is to be able to increase the DPI. So that text remains the same size (more or less. Based on the DPI setting you put, you can balance size of everything and work area space), but text, icons, etc.. are far sharper, smoother (more pixels can form each character). So in results, more work area and/or better visuals.
The problem is that there is a huge variety of resolutions, so if 4k is supported, 720p will also have to be supported. I think it could work, apple cracked it with the ipad 3. Everything is the same size, just nicer and sharper.
I sure understand the tech behind all this, but I don't need it. I'm 100% happy with the current DPI of 27" QHD screens and I'm sitting infront of it 12-16 hours a day. Be it for DTP, multimedia, office or gaming.
I'm not bothered about this monitor unless it slashes the price of 1600p 30" monitors. I don't need or want a dpi that high, it's really that simple.
