No, not that internet security, I mean protection from all these new privacy-invading surveillance laws.
What options are there for anonymity? Before you ask, I have nothing to hide, I just don't like the idea of all of it.
    I use a macbook pro and a desktop running windows 7 64-bit.

    Thanks

well, probs use a vpn - there are loads about, hotspot shield, openvpn, viper vpn to name a few.

Or just use tor all the time. (carefull though, you will find dark internets and guns)

Either way, the best way to protect yourself online is to make sure you always have an encrypted stream coming in and out, only way to do that easily is using vpn and thus ssl tunneling. Then your isp and everyone else who wants to snoop on your traffic can see diddly squat.

Truecrypt provides built in resistance to invasive hacking.

PGP can be used to encrypt e-mails to a decent level. The EU have actually been encouraging people to use encryption on their mail for years now to avoid US snooping. Keep in mind that in the UK it is illegal not to release a password to the police or government if they attain a court order, so in general all encryption should have two passwords where possible - one to open, one to destroy. Truecrypt allows for an extra volume which you can stick some plausable stuff on - the rest of the disk will look empty. You give them the wrong password, they get their access, but only to some really bad poetry and not whatever it is you want to protect.

Tor is one of many options for anonymous browsing, there are many options out there, with each having advantages and disadvantages. There is nothing inherently bad about any of them, it's just that sometimes bad people use them. This does not affect you.

SSL to a VPN for fast, but costly, anon net access.

Think that about covers the basics.

Oh and this is a no-brainer, but if you're into privacy don't be using things like torrents - they're the internet equivalent of offering unprotected sex on a friday night high street.

Oh and, welcome to China :)

Wow ok, theres a lot of terminology I need to look up...

Thanks for the helps, I've got a tor now but I don't think I'm gonna worry about encryption stuff, nobody bothers hacking macs, I've got a load of antivirus software etc and I don't click on porn site adverts :)

Thanks for the pointers, let's just hope they don't make privacy illegal.
