Project: Radical Fusion [10th June 07] Finishing the windows

Hi Guys, Welkom to my first project here on bit-tech!

As you can read above my project is called Radical Fusion, the cases i'm going to use are 2 CM Stackers (STC-01) they are going to house my current system (that will be converted to surfing & file storage) and a new gaming system.
The mod is going to get a industrial feel to it so the main color will be black (matt) and it's going to get some features like a keypad and a "ignition" key.

I'll just do a little fast forward with some photo's and explanation to point were i'm now cause you have to show some modding in your first post, the first pictures are a little bit low quality but they will be better as you can see further below.

Also all suggestions and comments are welcome


The design

HDD 1: WD 36gb Raptor (os)
HDD 2: Maxtor 160gb (programs) (will be replaced later on by a raptor)
HDD 3+4: 2x WD 500gb in raid 1 (file storage)


This is one of the stackers fresh out of the box:

Nothing special just waiting for some action.


A first mockup:

Just simple cardboard gives a nice idea how it's going to look before any real modding, and also the huge stacker box got a new life.


And here are they stacked for testing:

They don't sit as flat on each other as they are going to be but this was just a test, so there are still some rivets that will be drilled out.


One case took apart being rebuild on the other to get it completely flush:

As seen on the panel at first the project was going to be called Red Fusion (and it would have been one stacker) but the design of the letters is going to be used again.


I'll leave the cases alone for now, after i recieved the second PSU for this mod (Realpower 850W) I switched it with the one in my current rig for testing and so i could start modding the first PSU.
Some of the photo's below are made in a lightbox that i'll be using for the rest of the mod for the smaller parts.


It's a Realpower 550W a good PSU that has done it's job well in my current rig:

The Watt meter is a real nice feature the will return.


Took it apart to the bare chasis:

The strange holes in the back are from the first time it got modded but those will be covered up.


Also i got the Watt meter out of it's casing:



Ready to recieve a green LED instead of the standard blue one:



These boxes are going to be used for the wiring:

All of them taped up for easy marking.


But offcourse the one i needed now couldn't be taped complete because i ran out of it

The first cut for the hole were the wiring will pass through from out of the PSU.


And the second hole that will house the Watt meter:



After some filing it looked like this:



Meter back in place:

Sitting really snug so no glue or anything needed to hold it in place.


Replaced the blue LED fan for a much quieter Papst fan, also the stickers of the fan were removed, the black grill replaced with a chrome one and some nice hexhead bolts:



Here put together for a overall look the chrome hexheads will probably be replaced with with the same kind as used on the grill.



So that was the first part off the mod the PSU unit is going to be painted and and the wiring has to be resolderd and sleeved but first i have to see wich wiring is going to be needed and how long they have to be.

Later this day i will post another (small) update because some components arrived today.

The upper case is going to house my gaming system, the bottom one my file storing and surfing system.
It is really huge standing next to it you can lean on it.

So here for my first update!


2 of those boxes joined together:

In here the some electronics are going to be housed, mainly for the front controlpanel.


Some standard prints cut up to be able to slide in those boxes and test fitted with the relais i'm going to use:

These relais are salvaged from a lightning control system that was going to be tossed away in a building were i was working at the moment (i'm a electrician)
They are really nice they work on 12V and can switch up to 16A at 230V


An other part off the print with some kind of legs to fit nicely it the boxes:

I needed two letters for putting on 1 of the boxes.
Her are they marked up on a small piece of 1mm alu i had laying around:

They are the same "font" i'm going to use for the logo on the outside.


Roughly cut out the rest will be done with needle files:

For size comparison a 1 euro cent coin next to it.


A little fine sanding and polishing later:

(And by the way, the plural of "relay" is "relays", not "relais".)

 

I think i'm going to use some kind of glue cause they are very small

Thanks i couldn't find a plural of it so i used the dutch word.


Later today i'll post a small update on some off the materials and a sketch of the front.

 

Hi Guys!

In the first post i added a sketch of a part of the front panel, but it's the same as this one:

This is how it will work
1: You turn the key (the light grey is the key hole) to activate the keypad.
2: Give the correct 4number code.
3: flip one or both of the (dark grey) toggle switches to turn on 1 or both systems.



This is the keypad that will be modded to fit the front i designed:

Normally it's used to unlock doors but the contacts work on 12v so perfect for switching my relays.


Tomorrom out of work i'll post some more

 

that is a really cool idea, man. its good that the keypad is pre-existing and you didnt have to scratch-build your own, that would suck! im very interested in seeing where this is going.

 

looks amazing man...wish I could learn to use sketchup to model my current case project like that...

Thanks for the reactions

Scratchbuilding would indead have taken some time but if thought i had a schematic but this saves much time but i'm thinging of replacing the buttons for nice metal ones.

I never used sketchup befor and after the tutorial it's easy to use but a lot of work if you want to match the orignal case.

And what comes next wiil be some work on the case removing parts i don't need, the PSU cage(s) are allready removed so i can mount the top radiators.

Also today i recieved one 120 radiator a aquatube and some connectors so i can work out the dimensions.

 

This really look interesting ,i also like the keypad. By the way the aluminium letters did look very good and some Epoxy glue should be more then enough to hold them.
