Looks like we are going to Mars then.....wow "SpaceX founder Elon Musk has outlined his highly ambitious vision for manned missions to Mars, which he said could begin as soon as 2022 – three years sooner than his previous estimates. This is one of the most impressive projects I have seen". Further reading clicky [FULL] Elon Musk unveils Mars colonisation plan + Q&A (2016.9.27)
I would give my life for Elon Musk dream tbh, I earn good money but would scale back to bread water and lodgings for 20 years to help in any way possible to take this project forward. I spoke with a few important people about this and shared the presentation, he is a known person (liked very much but said to be a little too full of himself) and a few nations are supporting his tesla project is as much as I got. His comment in the video was pure brilliance, why do we go. You should not wake up every day and only fix problems, you have to create, to dream, to want to live. He nailed it. Its the biggest demote of my entire life that I cant help this project in any way, the only thing I can think to do even remotely helpfully would be to commission a VR project like the apollo project but to walk through first person (vr) spacex, What a dream, Not coming on stage and declaring a war........., a dream, some thing to stress the planets existence , its people, in the right way. This is easily the most important presentation I have ever seen and I am so angry with my self I am in no way able to help him or this team.
I don't think it's going to happen any time soon, least in 2022, but I think it is important that people like him talk about the idea and keep it alive and keep inspiring humanity to eventually get there. We will not get to Mars this century. But one day we will.
It's amazing to think that it's almost 44 years since the last Moon landing. I'm not remotely convinced that Musk can achieve half of what he's aiming for, certainly not within the timescale he's set. Incidentally, the budget for the Apollo Program was estimated to be between $20b and $40b (at 1960s prices), so about $150b to $300b in today's money.
It's not going to happen, may never happen. It's bad enough for NASA dealing with dust storm affecting machinery, getting into everything, every nook and cranny affecting mechanical things. And that's not the end of it, there's a global dust storm enveloping the entire planet. "What are you doing dear?" "Just looking out of my port window, yup nothing to see, another dusty day"

pump and dump recent posting mentioning tesla. pretty good play I guess? http://blogs.ft.com/ftdata/2016/04/14/lithium-price-on-the-rise/
one day this thread will celibrate the first man (+women) landing on mars, and I am going to bump this post if I am still alive. If im apparently not alive, can some one else bump it for me? I see thats a bit tech DIY BUTT KICKER you got there?
This is the way big things work. If the mentality is that it won't happen for 100 years it wont happen. It takes someone to say "I'm going there in 5 years" then start building engines and picking wallpaper colours for it to happen at all. Then things can happen surprisingly quickly. I think whether we go to Mars in the next century is down to will and money. The technological capability is comfortably there already. If it's done privately then it will have to be cheaper and smarter, but I think it could happen in the next 20 years if someone like Musk can maintain momentum and focus. An emerging superpower like China may get there first though.
The chances of humanity as a whole having a long and prosperous future have just been drastically diminished...
