Just wondered if any of the more experienced folders noticed any difference in folding performance, between same gpu but different memory size. ie 8800gt 256mb and 8800gt 512mb.
I've seen no performance increase from cards with more than 256MB of onboard RAM when folding. However, beware some super cheap cards with loads of RAM, i.e. a 9600 GSO with 1GB of RAM. To keep the costs down and snare unwary buyers who think that 'loads of RAM = more performance' these cards often have very slow memory which will reduce folding performance.
Keeping in note what Lizard said. Usually (on good video cards) more GPU memory will allow you to handle bigger textures size in games. Bigger textures allows more details to show when you play a game. It has no benefit in folding.
http://videocardshop.co.uk/product....718-0UTCQS@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@&prodid=PV-T88P-UHF They are graded but you get a 1yr warranty. The 2 8800gss i have i got from there and the run fine
My own experience was that the 256MB version ran a bit slower than the 512 on the old 480 point WUs but it was only a matter of about 300-400 ppd.
Don't ask! Too late. He has a very very LARGE leccy bill. I heard that the 384MB 9600GSO's were the only one of them good for folding, same deal with the 8800GS's, but the 8800GT's don't seem to be affected by this.
Think around the £6k mark (although I've added more machines & upgraded my AC since then so could be higher this year)
