I was just looking at my User Control Panel and I saw I received some reputation from a few people and that got me thinking.

Does everyone use it or is it forgotten about?

I was under the impression that only moderators/admins are dishing out Reputation at the moment.

I just noticed this the other day. Does anyone know how long the rep system has been in place, has it been since Bit-Tech switched to the new forum?

It was put in place after the software version changed IIRC.
It however was mods only so it must have been silently changed at some point or none of us ever realised :p

I've been using it since the mods announced it with the new forum change. First it was mods only (had to pm them to give it), but as cpemma has pointed out... they've opened it up, once it wasn't abused.
I like it a lot, as its a nice way to recognize helpful members as well as skilled modders.
Give rep! (as supertoad said, it costs nothing to do...) :D
Only thing I wish is a way to see who gave the rep. Comments section is nice so as to explain why the rep is given.

It was kept mods only at first because we didn't know how interested people would be and how prone it was to spam. Then we opened it up later and it seems to have worked out quite well so far, although we still hope people will use it responsibly :)

I will poke Jamie to change the logo in the new year perhaps, but he's super-humanly busy coding all sorts of super l33t stuff atm.

I kinda hate the reputation system. It rewards attributes and activities that I don't posess or carry out - helping people, being relevant, being friendly, etc. But despite being fairly specific in practice, it appears to be rating a user generally, so I feel I'm being devalued and marginalised just because I'm not a Good Samaritan in the forums.

There's a kinda 'scratch my back' element to it, too, whereby people who give a lot of reputation get a lot of reputation. And people who already have a lot of rep are more noticeable and their comments get read more often than other peoples', meaning they continue to get more than most people.

I guess I just hate the whole thing, really.

as the rep system is anonymous to everybody but mods, i don't think there's much of a "you scratch my back i'll scratch yours" thing going on. i have no idea who has given me rep (other than CK, 'cause he signed it :D). and i don't know how anybody else reads the forums, but i can't say i really pay any attention to how many green bars somebody has when i read their comments.

if you really are that concerned about not having lots of reputation, maybe you should try being a good samaritan on the forums. or being a sarcastic ass, that's what got me most of my points.
