Tbh I'm not sure how the 'man' knows if you are accessing broadcasts or not but I assume if you don't have an aerial plugged in and no sky etc then no-one will bother you

I haven't had a TV license for about 5 years now; I have had about 3 visits from TV license people in that time and they have been fine. One of them just warned me that if I watch things like sky news live on my mobile I would still need a license. On iplayer it warns you that you need a license to watch live TV but I am not sure if they record IP addresses yet.

I find it great not having to watch things at a certain times and I don't feel that I miss out on anything.

With Virgin, when renegotiating, mention things like cashback sites. I got the standard new deal to new customers (half price 6 months etc) plus £75 off my bills (what quidco was offering).

Grey area - you don't need a TV licence to watch catch up, ie, anything was has already been shown on TV. you DO need it if you're watching live TV online, eg, watching the footy live on iPlayer, iTV player, 4OD etc.

If you dont actually watch TV and can think of a hundred other ways to spend your time not slumped on the couch this is an easy way to save £150. Ditch the TV and do something with your life. Like play games

Vonage have saved me loads of money phoning family abroad over the years. need at least a steady 1mb line for it to have good quality.

which I just managed when I was on ADSL with BT 8MB plan... go figure.

We used to have a Zyxel P2002 VOIP box plugged into the cable router to use with SIP-based phone services - no separate landline. It was ok, since we didn't really use landlines much, but the call quality wasn't amazing.

You'll save a couple of quid a month by dropping Virgin tv. Just switch to freeview - no need for an htpc.

your right mate did a little research and from the TV licensing website:
"Exception: If you only watch catch-up services online, then you don’t need a licence. For example, you don’t need one to use BBC iPlayer, or ITV player, to catch up on programmes after they have been shown on TV."

so im not really changing much at all in the end. My GF wants to keep TV and land line, so the only thing that could possibly go is the broadband.... that's not gonna happen. might just try and barter them down instead.
