Memory Dell optiplex GX520

    Hi all. Got a Dell optiplex GX520 here that I got cheap that im going to use for a media center pc. wanting to upgrade the ram and install a graphics card

    This is what it looks like. dont have any photos of it.

    Not a lot of room

    Keyboard I got with it.

    Wanting to upgrade the ram to 4gb, 2x 2gb sticks. Thats the max it can have.

    MOBO: Dell Inc, OUT806
    CPU: is a Intel Pentium D, 820, 2.8GHz, daulcore. set on stock speed.
    RAM: Hyundai electronics 512mb, ddr2, PC2-3200 (200MHz)
    HDD: WDC WD400BD-75MRA3 40gb
    No graphics card

    Thinking about install a grahics card also any ideas.


    Any ideas on wha ram and graphics card?

    I'd just go for the cheapest 4Gb set you can.. :thumb:

    Grab an ATI 4550 if its got PCI-E, there avalible in low profile, and ideal for decoding HD media.

    Yeah just grab any cheap 4GB kit and leave it at that.

    From the pic it looks like PCI only. Would it be worth it in that case?

    EDIT: I just had a look at the Dell manual which confirms it's PCI only. Perhaps something like a 6200? However, if it was me, I wouldn't even bother.

    Only has 1 PCI slot on mobo but 2 slots in the case.

    Hyundai makes RAM? Who knew.

    Jaton makes a 9500GT that has a PCI interface, it costs a bundle though, just shy of $100. :(

    Theres also the HD2400, 9400GT and the 6200GT that are PCI. All of them are very overpriced as well, though they are low profile.

    Try soldering a pci-e x16 connector in there and see what happens.

    Or just get a pci card like everyone else has suggested.

    Wow, hardly any space next to the PCI slot, good luck getting any decent airflow!

    Overall a nice, small PC though, GL on the upgrades.

    are the USB graphics adapters any good? i know you can get them in NZ, dont know if it will offer a performance jump over the onboard.

    The on board is ok but wanting better.

    Yeh you can get the usb graphics things I seen them I dont think they would be that good.

    Think a PCI card will do.

    i would ebay for a GX620 motherboard so to have the PCI-E option.
