Anyone else see the news that Steam on Linux is almost ready for a closed beta? Clicky. Is anyone else going to sign up for this? I for one am really excited about this - it's about time that Linux had some serious developer interest. I will be signing up for the closed beta as soon as the form is released.

Nope. Steam to me is a big slow web browser that on its own holds no interest. What excites me is the direction it might take gaming on linux and the possibilities of the titles that might eventually end up on it.

The different pages that you look at using the steam client are essentially web pages. You can do almost everything from a web browser signed into your account that you can using the client. Regardless, a steam client on its own (or with a single game)isn't too exciting. So I won't be a beta tester.

The one thing that is most important for me is Steam chat. On Wine it is really flaky, and Valve have been determined not to release their chat protocol specifications, so a fully fledged Steam client would definitely improve my Linux experience.

I'd love to get in, as rob said, for me steam chat is one of the biggest things I want.
Since my laptop I'd be using it on can't really play games in any case.

Can't wait for Steam to come out on Linux. Perhaps finally older titles like "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" and other older Loki games for Linux will have the dust blown off them, the sound systems updated from OSS to ALSA/PA and for sale again!

Hell Unreal Tournament 3 would be nice.

Lol what? The web browser built in is only there so you don't have to launch firefox or something. The primary purposes of the steam client is to organize all your games, game update, and gaming pals in one convenient location.

:duh: What? Its clearly more than that.

I would be very interested in this beta. I have been slowly getting bored with Ubuntu based distro's over the past few months tho. Would definitely jump back to get a taste of steam on linux.

Heh, forgot about this thread. Got my invite 2 days ago, but before that I was using it along with Uplink and it seemed to work pretty well.
