Small point, but the Wii U doesn't use an AMD APU, it uses a PowerPC CPU and an AMD GPU, which are in the same package, but not on the same die (basically, so it has easy backward compatibility with Wii and GameCube titles on the Virtual Console without having to tweak problems in machine code) - it's a completely different setup from an x86 AMD APU.

Fixed 2 year sub so like a contract on a mobile phone. Can see that not been well received with parents if that is indeed the case.

Dou't we will see pricing or looks of the console we may not even here a release date. With rumours that USA will get it first rest of the world a few months later.

Ps4 is ment to be jap USA first then rest of world after.

I expect confirmation of the console not been online only tonight would be nice to get an official lock on it and would stop the rumour mill going into hyper drive.

The 2 year contract thing seems like a good sales strategy to me and I think a lot of people will opt to go this route given that most people will buy an Xbox live subscription anyway. Maybe if the term wasn't that long (maybe make it 1 year instead of 2) it would be even more appealing but in the end I think this will probably work for them.

Given peoples back-catalogues of games accumulated over many years of ownership, backward compatibility would be a big win for either of these consoles.

As for the pricing structure - lower price with 2yr fixed price monthly gold membership attached sounds like a payday loan to me.

I hope Sony maintain and promote the 'free to play' online mode that the PS3 has.

In terms of everything else - given most people in the western world that wanted a console now own one, these next gen models really need to promote a strong identity from before launch.

I am interested to see how this progresses, I won't be an early adopter though.

Would rather they actualy built a games console and not some monthly subscription based multi media extravaganza ******** the whole family can enjoy!. The wii tried that and its pish. ****ing money grabbing ***** tyring to appease the largest demographic possible.

I'm hoping they fix the d-pad on the controller and that its still compatible with the 360 and pc.

So if the PS4 has GDDR5 and the next Xbox uses DDR3, does that mean games are all going to be written to Xbox spec and the gains PS4 owners see will be minimal?

I suppose as with desktop APUs there will still be some performance gain from running faster memory.

It might also mean that people moan less about the speed of the memory in comparison to the Wii U and PC.

Important question: My thinking of RAM is that latency increases with speed, how wide is the gap between 4GHz GDDR5 (What I assume the PS4 will have) and 1600MHz DDR3 in latency terms? I read from a developer that memory size wasn't too much of an issue anymore, the problem lies in latency.

Could we see DDR3 being preferred for developers on latency terms regardless of speed or is it that much faster that it doesn't matter?

    Nintendo:

    3DS XL

Seems tit-for-tat really (unless you count Nintendo's region-locked handhelds as different models).

Will be glad once its announced but think in this day and age staggering releases to suit different regions as someone pointed out above is a stupid thing to do. I know there will be issues if you try to get 'x' millions of people trying to set up accounts and consoles to the same online service at the same time but if there are so few differences between PS4 & new Xbox then surely it's advantageous of the company to try and beat the other to release first?

All that said I believe both will be out worldwide by December 2013 if they're both planning release before holiday season.

Oh god the Xbox One is simply hideous! It genuinely looks like a cheap VCR from the 90s, or one of those really early DVD players. I never would have thought that they could make the original Xbox look like a fashion icon...

Agreed. Also, it looks like it's half covered in vents - i wonder if they're worried about overheating....
