GFX not working in old system

I hope you can help me out here.

I bought a XFX HD5450 (requires no power connecter) to go in my parents PC (XP 32bit, AMD 3800+ & Abit AN8 Mobo). This was to replace the 8800GT that’s currently in there being wasted on internet browsing. Having uninstalled the Nvidia drivers using CCleaner and installing the card, I get fans spinning but no Beep and no display. I tried using both the VGA and DVI as well as reseating with no luck.

To rule out a dud card, I then tried it in my system (Win 7, i5 2500k & 560ti). After uninstalling the Nvidia drivers in Programs & Features and it worked first time. Going back to my parents PC, I put the 8800GT back in and it worked just as before. Finally, I connected a Molex cable to the socket just above the PCI-e slots but this still had no effect.

Have I missed something really simple? Would resetting the BIOS do anything?

Thanks

I've seen this issue come up quite a few times in my time on these forums. There's an incompatibility with newer AMD/ATi cards with older motherboards with PCI-E 1.1 slots. The only way around is to get a Nvidia card unfortunately.

Thanks for replying.

I guess it's not too bad considering I only spent £20 on it and the only reason I did that was to take the 8800GT apart. I will leave it as it is until it's time for a new CPU/Motherboard.

Thanks
