I have more than one PC in the home, but only one of them have Windows - my gaming rig.

Lately it has started to show signs of needing an upgrade for more power.
    I need a better CPU.

Right now I have a very cheap option installed that has actually given me a LOT of bang for the buck, so Im seeking the same kind of experience without needing to do a bank heist.
    I have a Pentium G2030, socket 1155.
I am going to keep my Intel 520 240GB SSD, ASUS GTX 660 graphics card and my 8 GB of ram.
My motherboard is a MSI Z77MA-G45 with a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 CPU cooler.

I have found the following candidates:

    A
AMD Athlon II X4 860K CPU
    & ASUS A68HM-PLUS motherboard
...the cheapest upgrade on the list

4 cores and a good OC potential on a great motherboard, good upgrading potential.

    or

    B
    Intel Pentium G3258 CPU
    & ASRock Z97M Anniversary motherboard
    ...2nd cheapest :thumb:

A fun dual core CPU on a cheap MB with lots of potential, can keep it for later upgrades to i5/i7.

    or

    C
    Intel Core i3 4160 CPU
    ASUS VANGUARD B85 motherboard
...most expensive on the list :naughty:

GREAT motherboard were I dont need to think about K or non-k CPU as it can not OC, good starter CPU w dual core.

    or

Keep my S1155 motherboard and install a Intel Core i5 3470 CPU
...almost as expensive as the one above

Gives me a real bump now but will be harder and harder to upgrade as S1155 CPUs are starting to disappear because of S1150 and newer

    What would you choose?

FWIW I'd buy a used 3570k or 2500k and clock it later if necessary!

As above. Pick up a 2500K used for €90 or so and clock it up, it'll be a fair bit quicker than any current i5 at stock and a lot quicker in games.

Until Intel's architecture makes a leap the Sandy/Ivy big boys will hold their own.

Well, I went to bed and sent my friend a message in the morning, by then it was sold on ebay so no luck there :(
Instead I just found a guy who is willing to sell me a standart i5 3470 for £60, should I get that deal or try to find a K model instead (2500, 2600, 3570, 3770)?

Personally, I'd avoid a non-K chip and get a K model. It's clockable, so it should last longer! :thumb:

It seems to be a bit hard to find a good deal on k cpus for s1155 these days, so im thinking i could get this quad core non k as a temp solution?

Depending on how urgent the need is, you might find something on the MP here, and hopefully a seller that will ship to you?

Else, a non-K would be a big jump up from the Pentium!

Id go for a used 2500k for around £90~, you could clock it in the future and imo its a very sensible choice, although im on and amd system i don't recommend changing from intel to them.

Well I can´t seem to get any luck with finding a good old 1155 K CPU for a reasonable price right now, so instead I jumped the gun and found a ASUS MAXIMUS V GENE motherboard!
£120 is most likely not the best price, but that board seems to be in almost higher demand than the K CPUs, so I got it on a buy it now deal on eBay...

Am I not right about this being a kick-a// board for a K CPU?

Yes, Maximus V Gene is a great board, good choice. I did look at getting one, but am now running ITX, which means I can have a smaller & lighter rig (found a nice used Maximus VI Impact).
Like Hrlequin has already said, the non K i5s are great, the i5 3470 on Z77 in my work PC is very capable.
The K overclocking is the bonus on top of a very capable chipset.
Good luck with finding a good CPU

Today I won a eBay auction with a 3570K! I had not noticed the 2xxx series only support PCIe 2 and not 3, as all new graphics cards do... So now I am waiting for my new CPU and MB and will boost my PC dramatically!

    Thanks for everybodys help
