Does anyone know any good software for building websites? I'm probably asking for something that doesn't exist but it needs to be easy enough for a non-programmer to use. But capable creating quite a complex website. :eyebrow:

Basically, theres a few of us at work that play a football game where we each have to pick 7 teams each weekend that we think will score the most goals and place them against the relevant multipler ie...

    x2 Chelsea
    x3 WBA
    x4 Celtic
    x5 Notts County
    x6 Norwich
    x7 Aldershot
    x8 Mansfield

Each season there are more and more people playing, and its all down to one person to write down everyones teams. So what we'd like to do is get a site where everyone can have their own login and submit their own teams by the 1200hrs saturday deadline.

Obviously there are quite a few things we'd like to do with the site regarding stats and letting everyone see each others selections after the deadline.

Is this something that may be possible with website building software? Or is it specialist programming required?

    Cheers

yes, there are web building programs out there that will make a static site dreamweaver being one of them, alternatives are available.. visual studio etc etc. However, you'd have to learn php and mysql or an alternative pair as you're looking into a database driven site with several different queries. So as for finding a piece of software off the shelf for the purpose you need it for... no sorry mate

Use Macromedia MX. You don't need to know HTML, just do your website using features implemented in Macromedia.

Ha ha, 3 years have gone by since I posted this question and guess what... we still haven't sorted this website out.

There are now 60 of us 'in the game' and its becoming quite a job for the one person to be receiving 60 texts every Saturday, writing down everyone's teams and working out the scores. So the need for a website has come up again.

I suppose the question that we need to ask now is, where do we start?

Would I be correct in assuming that the creation of a database would be the starting point? Followed by the creation of a website that would enable to Input their teams to the database?

What about creating a spreadsheet in something like Google Docs? You could use the cloud to host the spreadsheet, and everyone's input would be viewable by everyone else. I don't know specifically what kind of formulas you want to run on the information, but I know that modern spreadsheets can be quite complex when it comes to crunching numbers.

We did consider doing something like that but decided against it for various reasons. Such as, some people just aren't computer literate and would end up destroying the spreadsheet, some won't even know what a cloud is! I don't think it would be secure enough either, some may input their own teams and then *edit* someone elses! If there was a way of locking it so that they could only input their own teams then it may be an option. We'd definitely prefer a website though.

It's PROBABLY the best choice, TBH.
    Unless you have a budget.

You can of course start teaching yourself code and get cracking, but chances are that it'll never get done. - not dissing you, but simply saying that it's a long road and since this wasn't done last time, it's probably not going to get done this time. Life happens.

The alternative is, of course, to pay someone to do it. No idea what the rates are overseas (from me, which is pretty much everyone on this forum), but I know around here a web developer can cost you between 30 and 70 GBP and hour.
