Hey just got into folding and getting random crashes actually had one while writing this post.

Firstly I had problems setting up the deino client I followed the guide on the folding at home website, when using the argument -configonly -smp whilst setting up client the client crashes when I set the client to anything but normal.

"Acceptable size of work assignment and work result packets (bigger units may have large memory demands) -- 'small' is <5MB, 'normal' is <10MB, and 'big' is >10MB (small/normal/big) [normal]?"

or trying to set the mach ID to anything other than 1

    "Machine ID (1-16) [1]?"

But by setting the default on both these settings I got the client working and have completed a couple of WDs. Although my computer hangs at random intervals.

I have been running the GPU client at the same time as the Deino client. I can run the standard system tray client cpu client and the gpu client together without any problems.

Not sure its much use but heres my log of the last crash

    Executable: C:\FAH\fah.exe

    Memory: 2GB 800hmz ddr2
    GPU: 4870 512mb
    PSU: 850W
    Operating system: Win XP

I have run memtest86 just to double check that the memory wasn't the problem, ran successfully with no errors.

I know its a beta client but would be good to get the ppd from it so any help would be greatly appreciated. As a side point I want to run the deino client on only three cores and use the other one for the gpu client. I am using the Arguments: -smp 3 -deino -local, I understood that this would run deino on 3 cores but it doesn't appear to work.

Another thing I forgot I just registered I always use the name whiterebbit (which is my folding name) but when trying to register I get the error
"That username is already in use or does not meet the administrator's standards.?"

As far as I can tell the user name hasn't been taken tried several variations until finally settling with my current one. I can only conclude that it does not meet the administrator's standards.
Anyone have an explanation for this.

No idea about the forums bit but we can help with the folding.

I'd run either the mpich version or (for more points) run the VMWARE player with 2x linux smp clients in it. This will give much better results. You should also be able to run your GPU if you set it's priority to slightly above and the VMWARE's to low or idle.

I can't run the mpich client I'm on a wireless network and would be a big pain to make it wired. Just had a look at your other option I running 32-bit win xp would this work?

    MPICH works fine on wireless.
As long as you turn virtualisation on in the BIOS VMWARE will work fine (and gives fantastic ppd)

I haven't had a experience with running virtual os, can you recommend any guides. Also just been on the folding@home website will either of these clients run in SMP mode on 32-bit winxp with virtual linux. Basically what i'm asking is can i virtualise a 64-bit linux in 32-bit win xp because I as I understand these clients they can only run a smp client in 64-bit linux.

    Linux
6.24beta Linux (x86) and BSD *combined uniprocessor and SMP client* (64-bit build)

6.02 Linux (x86) and BSD *combined uniprocessor and SMP client* (32-bit build; 64-bit OS required for SMP)

Use the guide here. It's the best one.
Just remember to use team 35947 & your username in the notfred VMWARE machine

Set the VMWARE machines to idle priority & the GPU to higher.
    Check your temps

Done I had set the vmware machines to idle b4 as in the guide just changed the gpu one. Temps are fine 55 C on CPU and 52 C on GPU. Happen before to me I updated my graphics drivers and thought I had solved it but obviously not. Any advice?

Also can I set the affinity and priority permanently.

Set Affinity II or Priaffinity can both set affinities for you.
Can you post some log file info from the crashing GPU?

Appears to be recovering from where it was.
I'd manually increase the fan speed and check the drivers (use either a newer or older version depending on what version you've got)

No anything about the best graphics drivers for stable folding on a 4870 just downloaded the latest drivers 9.6. This is the info from the Catalyst control centre and it thinks its version 9.5.

    Driver Packaging Version 8.612-090428a-080257C-ATI
    Catalyst™ Version 09.5
    Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
    2D Driver Version 6.14.10.6947
    2D Driver File Path System/ControlSet002/Services/ati2mtag/Device0
    Direct3D Version 6.14.10.0662
    OpenGL Version 6.14.10.8664
    Catalyst™ Control Center Version 2009.0428.2132.36839

Now set them to fold for CPChimps for the next week so we can finish 7th in the Chimps Challenge.
