For funk, George Clinton and Parliament are classic. Not familiar with acid jazz, but for jazz fusion, Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays are great. Also may want to check out Bob James.

    oooo.

ohio players. war. james brown. that's pretty much all you need to know about funk.

weather report. especially the Jaco years. early rippingtons, before they started calling mellow acid jazz "smooth". hrmm ....

sadly enough, i have let most of my jazz collection wander away ... anything involving a Wooten is pretty much a safe bet, except for Victor's solo album. kinda cheesey.

I fear jazz - I fear its lack of rules.

Depends what u call jazz - Les Paul (no, really)

Agree with Jaco, & Stanley Clark for chillout.

For a bit of fun, look up mexican sundance by al di-meola, john mclaughlin & paco de lucia

It's not strictly jazz, but if you like the sound of all those horns then check out the group 'Big Bad Voodoo Daddy'. They're a fantastic big bad swing group.

If you've ever seen the film Swingers then you'll recognize a few tracks, I love em :)

along those lines ... check out Royal Crown Revue. they started the swing revival. seen em live 3 times back in the mid 90's. good stuff. for a bit of a quirkier take on it, squirrel nut zippers were always good for a laugh.
