After the disappointing performance, power consumption and heat of the GTX 480 I want to know if anyone will be buying one or whether now that Fermi has flopped they will give in and buy a 5870, or maybe even hold on to they're old card for a while longer
Is there any need for it? Has somebody just released a fantastic, yet highly graphically demanding, new game? Am I skint again? No, no & yes.
Why anyone would buy a GTX480 over a 5870 is beyond me (and dont start with the PhysX/3D gaming malarkey...). GTX470 is slightly less unattractive but is still the same price as a 5870 and barely any faster than a 5850.... I had the money to buy a 5870 at launch but thought I was being smart by waiting to see what Nvidia was gonna offer, 6 months later and 5800's are more expensive and a price drop is more than wishful thinking.
No. With all these console ports, my 8800GT runs everything I want to play just fine. If I did want to upgrade, I wouldn't waste £400 + on a card that is so power-hungry and hot. I'd get a HD5870 instead.
For once ATI sucks at Folding@Home, so here's at least one good reason to go with Nvidia as it's so massively paralell architecture is very likely to deliver huge performance. Myself, after reading bit-tech revie I retracked from using GTX 480's in my project, will use two 470's as it seem to be much more reasonable offer.
just dont need it at the moment, cant say im particularly surprised its so bad though. late products ring alarm bells
TBH I think a 5850 will do just fine on a 1920x1200 resolution (or lower), and for 2560x1600 you'll need 5970 or other CF/SLI. Maybe this is just my take on it, not like I had money or were willing to pay any of those cards. HD4890 serves me just fine.
I was expecting a performance jump like when the 8 series cards were released. My expectations were not met, so I'll stick with my 8800gtx till I can no longer play the usual games on my 20" monitor, at at least medium. I don't bother with anti aliasing etc, so I'm still good till they do something worth buying again.
I was more interested in the 470 but I think I will be going with a 5850 instead (maybe even a stretch to 5870)
i'll stick with my 5870 for a while. but will probably go for Fermi v2 (gtx475) if driver improves and tessellation heavy games are about.
I did see this review of the 480 for gta 4 and the results are better makes sense really because gta 4 is vram hungry shame about the rest of the card though http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,...Fermi-performance-benchmarks/Reviews/?page=11
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. I was really interested in fermi but seeing the performance numbers for the HUGE power consumption I'm really put off. The price is also a rip off for what you get. I'll still keep an eye out for tessellation heavy games because seeing the anandtech tessellation benchmarks and the HUGE performance difference between ATI and Nvidia it could make for some interesting FPS difference but by that time I reckon ATI will have the 6 series cards released hopefully ATI will improve on the tessellation abilities of their cards. The future for ATI is looking bright. Look at it this way imagine how powerful a 5890 could be if they scaled the 5870 up to the power consumption of the GTX480? Now that would be one nice card
