I'm looking at upgrading my trust i5 2500k since it's starting to show it's age with most modern games + youtube is pushing it to a constant 100% usage. I'm having trouble deciding between the below, any thoughts/suggestions? 5820K https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MMLXIKY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE & MSI X99A https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product...act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE Or 6900K https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product..._act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AWHEWR3XNAWPT & ASUS MAXIMUS VIII https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product..._act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ABQJGLE2G5CGH I've also added 16GB DDR4 3000MHZ RAM and have a corsair i75 cooler for the CPU.
There's something else wrong if Youtube is maxing out a 2500k! Viruses? Last time you reloaded your OS?
That's my thinking. It doesn't even tax my ultra low power dual core, so something is very wrong with your system.
there's nowt wrong with your xhip mate, but like the others have said, there's something very strange going on within you system. If its just for gaming the 2500k will do just fine with everything out today.
I've googled the issue as it's been ongoing for a while, youtube videos are bumping CPU usage to 20%+ depending on quality. 1440p + is unwatchable as it's so choppy (even if left to buffer). Downloading and watching via any media player greatly reduces CPU load. It's probably a year or two since I did a fresh install of windows. Any easy way to check? It's currently only clocked to 3.6ghz ish after a drunken over clocking session went bad I probably should have mentioned in the OP that I mainly use it for games, video encoding and screen captures from time to time.
You can get a 6700K at Aria in the SuperSpecials section for 275.99. Not sure how long it will last. http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials...ke)+Socket+LGA1151+Processor+?productId=64168
I just tried playing this video on youtube at 4K and it puts my 4GHz 2500K at 40-55pc CPU. I'd be interested if those with newer CPUs could do the same test. I'm not aware of any issues playing games, as others have noted it's unlikely to be a bottleneck for a few more years. Despite having the upgrade itch I suspect I'll be keeping this CPU until the motherboard dies.
Reiterating what others have said, but I recently upgraded most major components except my 2500k and Sabertooth mobo. The only time the CPU is maxed is when playing games, and even then it's things like Crysis 3 or BF4. How many processes are you running? And what?
I forgot to mention the result of my google search - It seems to be a firefox bug that started when youtube switched to the current player (HTML5 I think), practically confirmed by testing in chrome. Firefox 80-90% Chrome 45-63% both @ 4GHZ OC Running processes
I should have mentioned that I was also using chrome. I think the consensus here is that there is no reason to upgrade a 2500K if the most taxing thing it does is gaming. There are of course some games which really do tax a processor, but you'll likely know already if you play that kind of thing - I hear that flight simulators and the X3 series of space games are of that sort.
For gaming today its still plenty fast enough, even more so with a moderate OC. But there's no getting past that its going to show its age with newer chips in CPU intensive tasks.
As above. It's still more than fast enough for next to every single game out there, but it does start to show its age in other intensive tasks. Skylake is approx. 20% faster clock for clock and then you also have the option of X99 which adds extra cores into the mix to give you even greater performance boosts in CPU intensive tasks.
