Are you folding on the 980? Did intel let you keep it for the cause? What sort of PPD is it getting / how hot?
Not right now - our best 980X is still burried inside Project Beast at the moment. Yes, Intel very rarely collect review samples form CPC/bit-tech. Sorry, re answer 1 I can't answer that question right now as I'll haven't had time to get of our 980X's folding yet.
I forget to add, that while I haven't got any of our 980X chips folding right now I did add a pair of Xeon X5680s folding last Friday. These are the 2P-capable workstation/server equivalent of the 980X and are currently running the bigadv client in Fedora 11.
Nice...... Lizard, I have a friend on OCUK who has got the 980X to 5ghz with hyperthreading turned off... When you get a chance can you see if you can achieve this.... Also (sry to be uninformed in the area but I try to avoid intel) what sort of effect does hyperthreading have on folding, is it significant? Although hats off to Intel for leaving you with that beasty, could you call them say it burnt out during review and you need another? Thanks in advance
5GHz with Hyper-Threading disabled You/he needs to read the latest issue of CPC where I can overclocked it to 5GHz with Hyper-Threading enabled Just over 20 mins a frame, which works out as 53,096ppd. In contrast, my pair of W5580s take 24 mins a frame, which works out as 40,898ppd.
OMG that is awesome, CPC hasnt arrived yet, ill check the post when I get in! So just to confirum you get 53000 PPD off 1 cpu?! That almost makes GPU folding a waste of time!!!
Not quite - that's 53k ppd from a pair of Xeons in a dual-processor motherboard. Pretty much so yes - especially as a pair of Xeons: 1. Consume a lot less power than the equivalent ppd from graphics cards... 2. ... so emit a lot less heat. A 50k ppd graphics card is deeply unpleasant to be in the same room with. 3. Are a hell of a lot more reliable thanks to server quality components, OSes and ECC registered RAM.
True enough, though if you do get some blades up and running it will be a great contribution to the team - especially with those pesky Ruskies closing in on us.
Job number 1 at my new company will be looking to consolidate 2 racks of servers to 1. The blades will need testing
No, I didn't want to disturb my trusty W5580s for too long so I just popped out one for a few mins to flash the BIOS on an Intel S5520SC motherboard instead. You will need a BIOS update to support the Xeon 5600 series though in all boards (Supermicro emailed me the appropriate BIOS a few weeks back).
You shouldnt be on the forum lizard! You should be looking into getting that 980 folding @ 5ghz with HT!!! tee hee... That will help hold off le ruskis! Got a 555 BE arriving tommorow for my 2nd folding rig, that will be it then for me but hopefully I can unlock this one to quad as well
By the looks of it we will overtake Overclockers Australia before the russians get us so we will be in spot # 5 for a month or two. We need around an extra 520k ppd to hold off the Russians!
