The decision to use UHD rendering and downsampling for 1080p is down to individual game developers, not Sony. They cannot impose a universal 'disable' switch for the same reason they do not impose a universal 'enable' switch: the PS4 Pro is designed to default to maximum compatibility, and will operate EXACTLY like a PS4 (CPU & GPU downclocked, extra GPU cores disabled, extra memory partitioned off) UNLESS the developer has explicitly added Pro functionality. This is to prevent cases like pixel-placed UI elements not scaling/locating correctly, or breaking any timing-dependant functions.

Basically: go bitch at the game developers who have implemented things lazily.

Sony could still provide a "run in PS4 mode" override option, though. Like my trusty old Commodore 128: when running it in C128 mode broke stuff, you could hold down the chicken-head key on power-on to boot into Commodore 64 mode - complete with a disabled numberpad, half the memory, and the old ROM.

The Commodore logo looks like a chicken's head and beak, so the key which bears said logo is... Well, you get it.

Article states 20 as the low but not the fps of the original. Why?

No, it doesn't: it states that the framerate drops by 20 FPS, not to 20 FPS. It's just badly phrased, for which I apologise: "frame rates can drop up to 20 frames per second (FPS)" is vague, and would be better reading "frame rates can drop by up to 20 frames per second (FPS)" - a modification I'll go make now!

No. Because what was the point of Sony issuing a bloody design and performance mandate if they do not impose it on the developers? The only people losing out are those that are paying more for the higher end SKU and getting subjectively, a worse experience.

They can and should force developers to stick to the spec else just to a 1:1 PS4 mode for unsupported Pro games.

Just another area where consoles are catching up with pcs, no one around with any authority to force game developers to make efficient use of the available resources.
