Going into the third year of a Masters in Mathematics at Durham.

CE sounds great, half wish I was doing it, although I don't think I could have not done Maths.

My advice for freshers is to try and talk to as many different people as possible, that way you can find out who you fit in with. Uni isn't like school where you meet everyone eventually and after the first few weeks it just gets harder and harder to make new contacts. Don't be like me and spend most of your first year not getting on brilliantly with the people you hang around with just because they're the ones who live in the same area (nicce people, but completely different interests).

After a short near fatal career in the military finaly given in and am off to Edge Hill to do teaching in the morning. Rather nervous as its been awhile since I have done anything academic and I'm not sure I will fit in with all the kids straight from school!

You most likely won't be the only mature student, don't worry!

I'd echo this, another good tip is to try and do things with your housemates you wouldn't normally go for; spend some time together and you might find you're great mates for life. Luckily that happened with all of mine.

I'm really jealous of people starting uni!

I really enjoyed first year of uni, met some really great people. I agree with whats said above, there is so many people at uni, don't settle for people you don't get along with that good - find some amazing mates as they are definitely there.

Almost certainly not! When I trained to teach the age range of trainees was from 21 - 61 (well near enough anyway!)

I graduated from Ryerson University this Summer with a Bachelor of Commerce, a business technology management major and marketing minor. The few pieces of advice I can give any post-secondary student.

Learn to manage your time. Professors don't harass you about projects and due dates like high school teachers did. Manage your time and use a calendar to clearly show what is due when. Staying on top of your work and readings makes it a hell of a lot easier.

Make friends early. Knowing people helps with group projects. My worst university experience was being stuck with a craptastic lazy group for a 60% report. I ended up doing a rediculous amount of work to pick up the slack and it was crazy stressful. Good groups are a godsend. However, if you're with a good group and you feel like you aren't contributing as much, be that guy who brings pizza or something to the group meeting. Another good thing with making friends is you can always share work. Now I use the word share loosely, I had a friend who was a year older who used to send me his old assignments. I would read them before I began my own and it just helped understand what was expected / help set guidelines. I don't condone submitting someone elses work.

Final point. For MOST classes, if you can read the textbook, you can pass. This mostly applies to theory instead of application, but taking the time to do your readings and staying on top will help you follow along in class. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

I am sure that this has been said in the other messages but the only thing I can say is talk to people. Hang out it halls, got to socials, join socities.

I just graduated and the only thing I would do differently is I would put more effort into my social life. I was/am in a long distance relationship, so I mistakenly stayed indoors and felt sorry for myself and now I kinda feel like I wasted a large part of my Uni "experience"

    Learn from my mistake

+1 to this, Mechatronics for me though :thumb: I wouldn't say I love it the same as I did when I started full time study because there is absolutely no social life to go along with my PT course, but I know it's time and money well spent and I still love the subject matter.

I'm in a long distance relationship ATM but I can't say it effects my social life.

EDIT: I meant to say it does effect my social life :duh:

I can definitely see that I am missing out on the social side of things. As a mature student I do feel like I appreciate the opportunity more though, going to have to work hard over the next two years to get a first!
