"They've been campaigning for a century to make the spelling of the English language easier and recently picketed a spelling bee in the US to make their point. Welcome to the Simplified Spelling Society.

Masha Bell, a member of the society and author of Understanding English Spelling, believes that reform of the spelling of the English language could help children learn to read and make life easier for some adults too."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6287194.stm and there's the matching glossary.

What do we think, dear children? :geek:

How bad do we have to dummy down. It sounds like a copout to me, not because it's difficult to learn, because it's too difficult for the lazy adults to teach?
My son is only 5 years old and reads and writes very well and has a pretty good vocabulary, it freaks me out sometimes.

As an aside, why do people write 'rediculous'? Is it genuine illiteracy or an affectation? I shall ridicule them.

Retarded! Teach people to spell proper dammit!

Theres only one redefinition that needs making, the and thats "ask" = "axe" - i.e. "leela, I wanna axe you something!". Im very serious :)

Seems to me, a few Dyslexics have got together and are trying to bring us down to their level. I do wish Solicitors would write in a terran language though. Even bable fish can't decipher them.:worried:

    I object to the phrase..

"a few Dyslexics have got together and are trying to bring us down to their level"

but would agree if it was instead...

"a few 16 year old asshats who can't be arsed to goto english classes and so spell things like they sound have got together and are trying to bring us down to their level"

    :)

I personally dont get why you would spell very verry, it doesn't make sense. Why dumb it down and not just teach people how to learn.

Ouch, yeah I have to agree there. Dyslexia is a disease, not a term for stupid people. My sister is dyslexic, it affected her quite a bit when she was younger.

This Masha Bell character needs to be hit with a 2x4.

[Quotw]Even just shedding the surplus letters from 100 of them, as in "friend- frend, beautiful - butiful,[/quote]
    Butiful would be pronounced butt-i-full.

Damn, what a crackhead. And she said it would save "zillions". Wow. Just wow.

A more significant conversion would be converting to the metric system. Now THAT's a change that would be worthwhile. That hasn't been successful because of the existing population. What would happen to everyone over the age of 6 when they started saying "u" instead of "you" and ennywun instead of "anyone"?

Again, someone needs to be cracked with a block of wood, I mean wud.

I didn't grow up knowing what 'arsed' meant, but ya know what? I read it, figured it out from context, and learned it.

People who cannot read often have many other issues that need to be rectified before they're offered simplified spelling.
