i just put togheter my computer, far away from my case, and i got no power on button. is there a way, to "jump"start the mainboard?
Find the pins on the motherboard that the power switch connects to, and connect them. I like to use the tip of a knife, but a jumper or a screwdriver'll also work quite well. They'll probably be labelled "pwr sw", but check your manual
at most 5 volts at 0.something miliamps. safe to start with a piece of metal, but i'd reccomend a philips screwdriver for it.
sorry to revive an old thread but is this possible without doing any damage to the motherboard? or is there a risk of sparks flying and it going into melt down?
doesn't do it any harm at all, the way i boot my RM server box is the two wires that should be on the power button, just spark them disconnected the button so mother couldn't poke it
it's not an actual spark, it's a term of phrase.... used totally wrong in this situation i guess haha
It'll work fine as long as you short the correct pins. The currents and voltages involved are just signal-level (in the tens of milliamps), so it won't be an issue.
HI, nEED a bit of help here, iv connected/short the correct pins and my pc starts and then turns off after 4-7 sec ........any 1 have any ideas y this happens?????? any help will be great
Don't keep them connected, the power switch just connects them for a quarter of a second. Touch them, it'll start up, and then immediately disconnect them
thanks for the reply, yep thats wat iv been doing and still it turns off after 4-6 secs any ideas wat could be causing this
could be lots of things. First off, welcome to the forums, second, good job at using the search function! There could be lots of reasons, lets start at the beginning though. What do you have for a system, list all the hardware thats in it. Once you list that, why are you trying to start it this way? Is this a brand new build? old one that isn't working anymore? etc.
its my old pc thats was working fine till the wires(led lights, power button, restart buttton etc) from the case got cut due to a mistake from me thinking it was only the wires for blue led lights and clock on the out side of the case on a open and close panel but now i dont have a power button to start my computer so i use a scewdriver to start it with the power pins which seemed to work till after 4-6 it turns off ....................my computer is intel 3.60 process.....2 gig of ddr ram...intel motherboard.....dvdrw....floppy.....etc The wires i cut where connected to a panel that opens (wen opend you see the dvdrw) and closes which broke off and was hanging for a year by the wires, so i had enough with the panel hanging down so i cut away the wiress which seem to be only the wires for the led lights and clock on the panel....how wrong was i....the wires run buck inside to the power and restart button....so now no power button how dumb i am.....
