Apologies posted this in the hardware and not tech support.

    Hi guys,

Been trying to sort this for the guts of a week now but to no avail.

Basically ive been getting random power offs on my custom built PC, it varys from 5 minutes to over 3 hours and i just cant find the issue! Its become very frustrating.

Ive brought it to a local repair shop and they stress tested the pc and it didnt crash, they advised me it could be my version of windows so i did a full wipe and its still happening. i used different HDD's too.

I even swapped out the power cables and changed the socket from which it was plugged into, still the same. so my question is, with the stress test done and memtest done too, could it be the PSU?

    SPECS:
    Quad Core Q6600
    Asus P35ne-SLI Mobo
    4gb Patriot ram
    2 x Seagate Barracuda 500gb
ATI radeon HD 4870 1gb GFX
Antec True Power Quattro 850 Watt PSU
    :waah:

Could be, could also be a ram issue, try testing it with the windows memory diagnostic.

Stress tested... Did you try running with C1E and EIST disabled, just to rule out the power saving features ?

Ran the test yesterday after a fresh install of windows 7. nothing at all came up.

Might need to explain a bit too, i had an illegitimate version of windows 7 for quite sometime. and the tech guys hinted that maybe it had something to do with that, now im not a noob when it comes to computers but i didnt think windows could do this, even after a fresh install...

hmm, does it go through all the normal shutdown procedures or just switch off?

Nope, its like someone cuts the power, i thought it might of been the power socket but the monitor or my speaker system dont power cycle..

I seem to remember the release candidate 2 version of windows 7 would randomly shut down for the month after the testing period, but I expect it would go through normal procedures.

Have you tried unplugging/disabling everything that isn't essential and seeing how long it stays on for?

But how would this affect me even after i made a clean instal with a legitimate copy? Yeah i ran it in safe mode and it ws fine, and even with the windows memory checker it was fine. but like i said it varys in time of shutdowns

hmmm, you say windows used to do this. I had some files on my old HDD that i saved (Save games, photos etc) Would this have a reference to the illegitimate software on it, and be causing the crashes on the new copy?

If the OS was responsible it would probably shut down properly, not suddenly. I expect something isn't quite right with the hardware/drivers.

Most people are pointing to the PSU.

So ill get in contact with Antec and see what they say. Its got a 5 year warranty so it cant hurt.

Before you do, try having nothing but your MB, CPU and Ram and boot disk plugged in, use onboard gfx if possible and disable everything that is unnecessary in the bios, just in case it's not the PSU, otherwise you could be waiting for weeks for the PSU to return only to find it's not the problem.

Guys in the repair center tried this, and so nothing... could it be a surge protector?

Is your elec supply prone to surges?

I think after a few surges they become less effective but not sure how it would affect the system, I'd think it just wouldn't protect it, not shut it down.

Could try plugging it into the mains directly.

    Have you checked your temps?

Might even be the north or southbridge on the motherboard, try opening the case and pointing a fan at the motherboard.
