Since around 3 this morining I can't sent or recieve WU's. There's lots of posts about this issue on the folding forums, the server status page seem to show that it is accepting. Is there anyway to force the client to request another server from the assignment server?

[07:34:40] + Attempting to get work packet
[07:34:40] - Connecting to assignment server
    [07:34:41] - Successful: assigned to (171.64.65.56).
    [07:34:41] + News From Folding@Home: Welcome to Folding@Home
    [07:34:41] Loaded queue successfully.
[07:34:41] - Couldn't send HTTP request to server
    [07:34:41] (Got status 503)
[07:34:41] + Could not connect to Work Server
[07:34:41] - Attempt #7 to get work failed, and no other work to do.
    Waiting before retry.

Why do things like this happen before I go to work and not at the weekend?

Same here, been like it for a couple of days here. :grr:

Monitoring them yesterday a reset of the virtual machine seemed to improve their chances of downloading a new unit, but I suppose that could just be down to the frequency with which the attempts occur.

Still got 2 waiting, 1 has managed to scrounge some work though.

As said in the OP the issue is clear to see here http://fah-web.stanford.edu/localinfo/contact.SMP.html (Mon 2 Nov 12.08 PST)

8.56 is obviously a very high load for the server!

It was only at 3.2 earlier and I couldn't get work then!

Back log will go eventually I assume, if it doesn't crash altogether.

I am now getting work but can't get anything sent back, I'll just have to be patient I guess.
