Hey guys, I have started folding today ( on my main computer ). Can you tell me any tips please? Pc Specs - Amd Athlon 6000+ Dual core 3Ghz 2GB DDR2 Ram XFX 9800GTX+ XT They're both on the same computer. CPU folding is bad but the GPU isnt too bad. My website: http://penguinstrikeforce.co.cc My online folding status: http://penguinstrikeforce.co.cc/Folding_Online/foldingstatus.html Thank you.
First of all, welcome to the team Now, as for tips... you should be able to substantially increase your PPD by switching the CPU from the standard client to the SMP client (it will use both cores of your CPU, not just one). Oh... and don't forget to add your CPU + GPU to the appropriate countdown threads (they're stickied at the top of the forum).
Welcome Panomama As Lizard says, the SMP client will run well on your Athlon 6000+. You may find statements along the lines of "SMP requires quad-core" - ignore them; it's old advice. Do you plan to leave your PC running 24/7 ? The SMP client has much shorter deadlines than the ordinary client, and you may find you can't meet them if you only run for a few hours a day. The brand-new SMP2 client may become available before the end of the year, keep an eye on these forums. Actually, that's good advice for all hardware and clients - Keep an eye on these forums, and the main Stanford forums. Happy folding
Thanks alot guys. I've tried to get the SMP to work, but to no prevail. I will try again today. This is my main computer and it won't be on 24/7 after today. Lizard - your James Gorbold. I like reading your stuff
If it's not on 24/7 you will find it hard to keep to the WU deadlines like I did. I run 2 Single core clients on each core on all my Dual core machines.
I've got the smp client working. But, it's been on for about 2 hours now, and its still 0%. I got the SMP working. But it's still at 0 percent. It's been like that for 3 hours now. I only have the GPU client also running. Help please?
If you open task manager are your CPU cores @ 100%? If you then go into the processes tab does the FahCore_xx processes have high CPU usage? If so then its working, what project you running? If its worth 1920 points then it will take a long time, have you got FahMon monitoring the SMP client? What does the fahlog.txt say?
Woah. Both cores are at 90 - 100% all the time. It's worth 1760 points. ( Fahmon says so ) I've got lots of Fahcore's running look: FahCore_11.exe FahCore_78.exe FahCore_a1.exe FahCore_a1.exe FahCore_a1.exe FahCore_a1.exe Fah-SMP-591.exe Folding@Home.exe Folding@Home.exe EDIT: Never mind, its gone too 1% ( it took 5 hours )
WOW 5 hours for 1% thats crazy slow! If I were you bud I would look into the VMware Not Fred SMP Client, its basically a Linux Virtual machine running FAH but generally produces twice as much PPD as the windows SMP! Heres the "how to" link enjoy - http://www.maximumpc.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=92133
Thanks alot. I have a virtual box with ubuntu on it, but its slow. I'll try this. Also, I Overclocked my GPU about 15% better ppd. ( it's stable ) Edit: Yay my sig works.
I've got it working, Still 0%. Can't seem to add it to fahmon. How did you do it? EDIT: Worked it out: http://192.168.1.4/1/ It took 32 mins for 1%. i chose fold64 at the start.
Welcome to bit-tech and to the team Seems everyone is sorting you out advise wise so I'll just leave you with this: Avail (I'm a grammar nazi, don't hate me for it )
