Because SCIENCE: "We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time." - T. S. Eliot That is all.
I feel 8 again every time mankind achieves these epic milestones. I'm literally dripping at the prospect of what's to come from NH.
Was talking to someone at work about this, amazing to think theres a probe out there about to do this. Been an amazing year for space exploration, landing on a comet and this. The images that will come back will hopefully be amazing. Think the most amazing thing is though that both Voyager spacecraft are out there still sending back data from the ISM, the data provided already meant a massive rethink in terms of what is out there. Be nice actually if they can spin NH around and take a shot similar to the one they did with Voyager 2
On the same day, no less, that CERN announced that they might have found evidence of the pentaquark - at last.
They should receive more pictures this evening, I've read that it takes 4 hours for the datas to reach Earth.
Supposedly they are going to send back a heavily compressed version of the data first and then transmit it uncompressed... which should finish in November 2016 Bloody 2kbps.
That happens when you're transmitting between 1 and 2 Kbps. Still, that much lag and they still managed to get a headshot. That's some l33t skillz there.
The New Horizons twitter thread does Pluto Haikus. My contribution: Little rock dancing in the dark, flashes a smile for the camera.
Yeah, NASA folks have a pretty good sense of humor: New Horizons Pluto Flyby (201507140043HQ) by NASA HQ PHOTO, on Flickr
