    Hey Guys,

Well lets start from the top, a very long time ago (5 or 6 years) I had a really high end (or it was back then) gaming PC that i built but as time went on I longed for a portable laptop that i could roam around with and still have the power so I bought a Dell Inspiron 1525 which i have now upgraded and has the following Specs:

    1TB Western Digital HDD
    4GB DDR2 Ram
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83Ghz Processor
    DVD+-RW Drive
Intel Graphics Medial 695 Integrated GPU
    Etc Etc

A few weeks ago I was asked to do some video editing for a friend to make their wedding DVD and then some Photo editing for them, my laptop seemed to struggle a bit when doing the DVD editing so i decided i really could do with a PC again so I began speccing up PC's and decided I dont need anything amazingly high end like an i7 980x or 24GB of Ram but just something that was powerful enough to do video editing with no sweat and a bit of gaming

So here are the specs I have come up with and if you guys see any issues or anything that could be better etc then i would love your comments....

    Type Component Price
    Case Antec 300 43.99
    HDD1 Samsung F3 1TB 48.49
    HDD2 Samsung F3 1TB 48.49
    Optical 1 LG DVD+-RW 19.99
    Optical 2 LG DVD+-RW 19.99
    RAM Corsair 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz 120.00
    CPU Intel i5 750 167.71
PSU Corsair 650W TX Series PSU 77.99
    Mobo ASUS P7P55D-E PRO 169.92
    GPU Sapphire HD 5770 1GB 150.90
    Wifi D-Link AirPlus-G DWL-G510 PCI Adapter 17.48

    TOTAL 884.95

Because Im only 16 and am earning a lifeguards wage I have decided im going to buy parts in groups, and As ive got an old crappy Celeron PC up in the loft i can test the HDD's and Opticals drives in that and also put it all in the Antec 300 but i will probably buy

the case, HHD1, Optical 1 and WIFI in the first section
HDD 2, Optical 2 in the second section
    PSU in the next
    RAM in next
    CPU in next
Mobo in the next and finally the GPU

or if i can stretch then the CPU and GPU in the same group so i could get it set up quicker :D

I have windows 7 Ultimate at home which i can use but if neccesary i can buy a new copy later on...

All of these prices are from ebuyer, i have a personal preference to this compay as i have never had an issue with them and they always seem to deliver on time, unless a company is significantly cheaper then i would prefer to stick with ebuyer!

Thanks and i look forward to your comments!

I would suggest you get a Gigabyte P55M-UD2 for the motherboard, and with the extra cash saved from that get an nVidia GTX460.

Also, the RAM kits that come in groups of three sticks, providing 6 GB are usually triple channel, and are thus designed with X58 motherboards in mind. I'm not quite sure but I think the magic numbers with dual channel are 4GB or 8GB when using 2GB sticks.

Other than that it all looks pretty good to me.

With an i5 CPU you don't need triple channel RAM, only dual channel. If 4GB is not enough for your particular tasks, add another 4GB later.

With an Antec 300 I would go for a modular PSU such as the Antec True Power New 650w which is about the same price. It is only partially modular but the captive cables on it are ones you will always use anyway. The case isn't the best for cable routing so the less you have to route, the easier it will be.

Go for a Gigabye P55A-UD3R motherboard, it is cheaper than the Asus you chose and just as good.

Get one of the new NVidia GTX260 graphics cards, same price as the 5770 you listed but better.

I'll draw up an alternative list and post it shortly.

Can I ask what specific use you will be using the PC for? You mention video editing. Is there anything else you use it for, e.g. gaming etc?

The only reason i went for the ASUS mobo rather than the Gigabyte is the USB3.0 and the 6gpbs SATA

but i have updated my shopping list to include the Zotac 1gb GTX 460 card :D

what would you sugggest the ASUS or gigabyte board?

Like LordVale says, the Buyer's Guide recommends the UD2. Personally, I'd grab the UD3R on the offchance that you'll want an SSD to give you a performance boost in the next few years, for which SATA6 would be necessary. USB3 won't catch on for a while, I'm guessing, but it can't hurt.

I would go for gigabite personally.

I think wait till new standards is widely supported, then upgrade your mobo later.

    Total with UD2 = £754.33
    Total with UD3R = £790.76

The P55A-UD3R is £36.43 more expensive than the UD2. I couldn't find you particlar wireless card on Scan but it is a small amount to add to the total.

You could also go for the Enthusiast Overclocker options for a bigger case and a very quiet CPU cooler.

What resolution is your monitor by the way?

Hi, Matt. I would recommend holding on to your money until you're ready to buy the whole lot as it sounds like it will be quite a while between first buy and last buy. You will probably save a fair amount of money by doing this as components usually decrease in price fairly quickly as new components are released. Also you should be able to get a better spec PC for the same price at a later date.

Thanks flamin9_t00l, i understand that the prices will come down as time goes on especially with the release of a lot of new tech in 2011 but as im saving for a car at the same time what im doing is putting 500 or 600 pounds into my savings from my wages each month and leaving the remaining £200 for what ever I like (building this PC)

No worries. Note that it doesn't contain the wireless card as I couldn't find your exact spec on Scan.

thats fine, it was just a dirt cheap one on ebuyer as i was gunna stick it into my old celeron PC in the loft before i build this but for my own PC i would probably spring for a wireless -"n" card as i have an "N" router :D

Also note what I mentioned in my first post about the PSU. Modular cables are a godsend in a smaller case such as the Antec 300. The Antec TruePower New 650w is a very good PSU and more or less the same price as the Corsair TX650.
