    Hi guys
ive recently bought a GTX 580 of these forums (chuffed with it) thing is im using an LG M2794D monitor with a max res of 1,920 x 1,080...now a local shop has told me that the GTX 580 was overkill for my monitor and that a smaller card like the 5870 ( :waah:) would be better suited for my LG
    any ideas guys
    thanks

For that res it will handle anything you throw at it, definitely. However it just means you don't need to worry in the future, so relaxxxxx! :D

how much was the local shop trying to sell you 5870 for?

no such thing as too big, although 3GB more than enough for 1920x1080.

I wouldn't worry about it, if you were buying I'd probably recommend a 570, but a 580 gives you a bit more leeway when it comes to minimum frame rates, so I think you've hit the sweet spot.

a 5870 wouldnt cut it for long at your resolution tbh.

Its a bit overkill but thats the best way of upgrading :)

Yeh, I run a 5870 at that res and although it still handles all games nearly maxed out its beginning to start showing its age, I get frame rate drops on some new games. It handled Portal 2 fine, but the card was at 99-100% load at times...

    I wish I had a 580... :p

If ur worried about to much power I'll swap you my Gainward Gtx 580 GS 1.5gb for your 3gb!
At 1080 resolution you'll never need the 3gb but at my resolution I could do with your card!!

Surely a game built on a slightly modified Source engine shouldn't be causing you frame rate drops. Are we talking below 30fps?

The card is fine for your resolution. Unless you desperately need the cash for some reason, keep it.

Pete I don't think you should be allowed to talk about overkill...

Nah, Portal2 runs smoothly, its more Shogun2, BC2, ect that I get drops, but never to unplayable levels (below 25fps)

It's not so much about your monitor as it is about what games you play. My GTX470 handles everything fine at 1920x1200 (even Crysis) so I doubt a GTX580 would struggle with much. :thumb:

Even if it's overkill.. let's say.... well.. instead of running back at the store after 2 years to buying a new card.. you'll be able to keep yours for 3 years and half. Perfect room to wait for a new coming up card, or wait for better prices or special.

Associating card power to monitor resolution has never really made sense to me.
I don't buy a card to drive my monitor, I buy a card to run my games (and next year's games) at the highest settings that it can handle at a resolution that's desirable.

Sure, the native resolution of your monitor is almost always going to be the most desirable one, but having a card that's "more than enough" to drive that resolution just means you have more grunt left over for extra graphical fidelity and features like AA or AF, as well as better future-proofing for the next series of games and their higher demands (at the same resolution).

People put way too much emphasis on resolution when they're selling and buying graphics cards and it's a silly over-simplification of the issues involved.

    Heh ;) .

Until I can play Crysis with minimums of 60FPS with custom settings, 8xAA and a resolution of 2560x1600, I won't be happy :D .
