I have done an internet search and forum and cannot find an answer so apologies if this has been asked before.

I have just migrated some data (steam, documents, software) to a new 1TB ssd from a 1TB HDD, the OS is on another drive.

I want to format the original drive to use as a backup. Can I simply now change the drive letter for the new drive to correspond to the old drive and format the old. Will that work in terms of installed software still pointing to the correct folder?

    thanks

    It should work just fine.
First go into Disk Management in Computer Management. Remove or change the dirve letter for the old drive (for example if the old drive is on E: then change it to X:, then change the new SSD to E: ).
Then turn your computer off, and unplug the old drive and restart.
Check that all of your programs etc. work, then, when you're happy you don't need anything off it you can format the old drive.
