Hi all, I am trying to do what should be simple, clone my C drive to E.
Using XXclone it says it has worked and is bootable but it is not.
Tried Macrium which said target drive was
a different geometry, it tried to do it but failed.
To my knowledge there is nothing wrong with the E drive.
Running XP pro, both drives are sata.

I all ways use Acronis , but I've heard good things about clonezilla and it's free

Is the E drive blank, same size or bigger? a lot of cloning programs won't clone to a smaller drive

You can't really clone C from inside windows - you need to boot into a different environment so you aren't inside windows when you are doing it.

I use clonezilla for this fairly often.

I have Acronis but it will not let me enter the 64 digit serial number for some reason, It stops about halfway and then I can type no further digits nor can I paste it in.

Are you using the acronis disk? you should boot from the disk can't remember having to enter any code for it unless you're installing it on the rig which isn't needed to do a clone.

You sure that's right re the "64 digit serial number?" that's a long serial number

Thanks T, it is an old version 10 which I bought a few years back and got the proper disk by post, not one I made myself from a download. When I boot from it it asks for the serial number which is 64 digits long which may sound ridiculous but I have had it working in the past. I found it was not for me so stopped using it, I preferred cloning where I could just swop the disks if there were problems.

I need xp on a second PC for a specific reason. When it started to malfunction I thought I would clone it to another drive as a backup whilst I tried to sort the original. Having given up with the cloning I managed to fix the original which then cloned OK to the internal backup drive. I originally had a clone on an external drive but it is a 1TB sealed unit with 3 partitions so I could not fit it other than by USB. The software XXclone and Macrium would let me clone to a USB drive but not the other way round so pretty useless.

I also have Win7 on the external drive which I wish to put back on the same PC but can't do that either.

actually, if you have the right program you can clone the c drive, from within windows, I use HDclone without issue

This seems to be the problem.
    This is from HDclone free.
"The Free Edition of HDClone, clones an entire hard disk to another larger medium"

So from that, i take it to meen, you can not clone a 128 ssd from a 500gb hdd.
I tryed to do this with Acronis and Todo, but failed.:sigh:

that is correct, the free version won't allow you go clone to a smaller drive, but the personal edition isn't overly expensive

You can clone from any size down to a 128GB SSD (Acronis). So long as it will fit of course. ie if you are only using 95GB/500GB on the drive to be cloned it will be fine. Just use the "manual" option and choose "proportional" on the partition options.

just looked in and thanks for the many replies. I just can't seem
to get anything to work on the thing,
Acronis I cannot enter the serial number,
Macrium refuses to create a boot disk ( error every time) nor can I download and re-instal it (error every time on the instal)
XXclone will let me clone to an external drive but not back from it. I appreciate your help and
will try to explain what I wish to do starting from scratch. I have an old desktop make unknown, dual boot to XP or W7.
Dual boot stopped working just went straight into XP every time. I have EasyBCD installed. Backups
of both drives are on an external 1TB usb drive with 3 partitions . XP was
done with Acronis as an image. W7 was done using XXclone as a clone.
I just want to put it back as it was unless there is some else fundamentally wrong with it. The backups are about 2mnths old.
