You can buy software packages that do this (NetNanny is a famous example).

Router settings... just do a blanket ban on *xxx*, *sex*, etc. Or better yet, go with a whitelist only approach for the system in question, if you just want to allow game ports access.

Or, more fun, hide a webcam somewhere in the room, and set up some CCTV type of thing, then wire up an alarm or something so when you push the button some sort of klaxon goes off.

How old are they? Tbh if they're 15 or over don't bother. Most kids are accessing porn by that age anyway, at least geekways inclined ones, might as well just let 'em go ahead instead of forcing them to break around annoying countermeasures.

If they're younger of course, something like netnanny, but most importantly supervision while they're online(if your kids are too young to see the worst of the internet then they shouldn't be on the internet unsupervised frankly). Things like netnanny are never going to be 100%, if they're half as geeky as your average bit-techer they'll bypass it in under a week. Supervision and eventually just acceptance are imo, the best options.

Doubt it. But if the machine is using IE (and can't be switched to FF), just change the security settings to disallow activeX controls and, if you're a bit more paranoid, downloading.

14, tbh not that big of a deal imo. At least tell 'em to clear out the cookies and history so you can pretend it's not happening :) If nobody's willing to supervise then you've honestly got no right to complain. Being unavailable for part of the time is no excuse if you aren't willing to do anything when you are available.

If you are behind a router, you could just completely disallow net access during the hours while you're out. Well, it should be an option anyways, it is on mine and it's a fairly cheap one. Not the best solution and certainly easily bypassed by just plugging directly into the modem, but chances are that if they're smart enough to do that then anything else you do is only going to be a minor hindrance.

netnanny doesnt block spyware, but net nanny is a very good program.

use netnanny and microsofts 'defender' program and you'll be fine

Anything you have to ask on a forum to be able to do, your kids will do better. Have fun! :D

if your router has an SPI firewall then you could simply just block the domain names. for example: microsoft.* on my router would block all domain incarnations of microsoft sites. it can also only allow access during certain times of the day. It's an option. or just take the power adapter for the modem with you to work :D no power, no internet.

Therein lies the problem. If there are things on the internet you don't want the kids to see, you have to supervise them. If you don't want to supervise them, cut off the net-access until they're old enough to do whatever they want.

I had my net access severely limited untill I was 16. Didn't really phase me that much, weekdays school had limited access, then I'd get home do my homework and when my mum came down I was on the computer.

It seem quite alien to me being banned/limited from the net. I didn't even have the net when i was at school :(

The only suggestion i see is supervision or banning.

Hear about this a lot these days. if they are not mature enough to be on the net unsupervised then they shouldnt be allowed on there. Lazy parenting and then they complain to the website when really their faul for letting them.

They are always going to get past something in end.

Net nanny well known product also hosts files that can be downloaded to block major stuff.

How about blocking all sites for the hours you can't be there but allow certain game ports to be open?

I agree with the above though, supervision is the only way to be sure.
If you don't want to supervise but don't want them seeing pr0n either, then no access is the only way.

I do see it being quite strange that we frown upon kids seeing a natural act like sex (unless its with a horse, bestialty etc aint that natural) but we're more than willing to allow them to shoot/kill/dismember others in games?

    Lol wtf.

    Why don't you go...

Tools > internet options > content > content advisor > enable

Then set the sliders for sex to what ever level of control you want, then click ok, then set the password.
    :eyebrow:
Why has noone said that yet?!

Also, if they find sites that are not banned, you can find them in the history/cookies then just disallow access to that site or make the filtering more strict.

    Someone did.

And then he said that Opera and Firefox were the browsers on the system.
