i'm trying to add a coupler serial ports to an old WRT54G v3 router and luckily found a tutorial here for my exact model (except its the GS version) the guy used a kit featuring what looks like a MAX233 Multichannel RS-232 Driver/Receiver. i have a bunch of Maxim max231epd and max231cpd (there isn't really a difference between epd and cpd right?) chips laying around. according to the datasheet for the 231 and 233 it uses 5v but the above the router guide says the max233 can operate on 3v. can anyone confirm that the max231 can also work on 3v? i'm working on a schematic for the max circuit, i'll post a pic here once its done
No it wont work with 3v unfortunately. To be honest using the chip adds little value - it's just adding complexity. When i was doing this i decided to use one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Serial-US...K_Computing_Networking_SM&hash=item43abea36ae A serial bluetooth module. About £2 more all-in but no need to plug in cables. Much better IMO.
the ultimate goal is this: http://www.jbprojects.net/projects/wifirobot/ got a router, stripped RC truck, and an arduino ready to go.
