I shot an event today with the D5100 along side my D700, and I've tried in three different programs to sort the files by the time captured, ('date captured') and it doesnt actually do anything. I want all the photos to appear as they were shot by the time stamp. Any ideas?

Lightroom. Grid view, and select display by "Capture order"?

Are the 2 camera's time correctly set?

ACDsee will sort via EXIF info 'sort by Date Captured', rather then file created dates etc

Have you tried just sorting in Windows (assuming you're using Windows)? Right click in the window, sort by -> more -> Date Taken.

If that doesn't work maybe right click one of the photos -> properties -> details and check the metadata to see what details have actually been stored.

Nope, it still wants to sort by file number and has the second set of files from the second camera start directly after the first set from cam 1.

All programs in question all have 'sort by date captured' option, but all are doing the same thing :/

Sorry - I've only got ACDsee as a point of reference as I don't use any other.

Sometimes the problem is that the clock settings on the two cameras are not in sync. A lot of photographers at the beginning of a shoot will take both cameras and shoot the same picture at the same time to be able to tell the discrepancy. That said, try this.

This. you really need to sync the clocks with 2 bodies. Also, set your file names in camera to 2 different names. leaving it stock as DSC only confuses the files in the computer.

    Sort by EXIF-Date and rename.
Rename because Windows wil always resort to name whenever possible.
I sometimes do this for 2-4 camera's but someone ALWAYS forgets it's summer time, or they've skipped a time zone or whatever.
